Nice to see we've picked up exactly where we left off at the end of the winter. :fp:

Looking at the dismissals today... not meaning to take anything away from Pakistan's bowling unit, but most were batsman error. Cook and Stokes got good deliveries (though they could still have done better), the rest either got out trying to wallop the ball or through poor footwork.

They don't seem to understand that sometimes in test cricket you've got to take a siege mentality and get stuck in, rather than trying to hit boundaries. Sometimes the opposition, particularly if it's a good bowling unit, will be on top, but eventually they will wear down and start bowling bad balls.

I've little doubt that Pakistan will take a 100+ lead into the third innings which will all but spell defeat.

You can't get a bunch of cricketers who earn the most money playing limited overs to grasp the patience required for test cricket. Most of them don't even play county cricket anymore so they barely play the long form of the game outside of test matches.

Today was horrific.

Firstly, the fielding. Cook needs to be moved out of the slip cordon. He just doesn't have the ability to take enough catches in there. We saw it last year and we continue to see it this year. Put Stokes at first slip, Root back at second. They also need one person to take control of organising the cordon's positioning, every one of them was caught out of position at some point. And for the love of Christ stop switching people in and out. Keep the personnel consistent otherwise at least one person will always be out of sync with the rest.

I thought, generally speaking, that they bowled well today. They created plenty of chances but the field wasted too many. England should have been batting for the last hour. And apparently we can't even bowl out a tail with the Duke ball anymore. I didn't agree with giving Stokes the new ball; he bowls very well with the old ball but there's nobody better than Jimmy with a new cherry. By the time they handed it to him it was 20 overs old! Wood and Broad deserved better from their efforts.

Yo, whenever less the cricket season end?

I'm not going to reset this thread as it's mid season I think (there was some cricket on the pub so that all my assumption comes from) when the season does end can be make sure we set to a new thread and then repeat each year?

This thread isn't busy enough for it to matter too much. I'll let Chairman of the James Vince Fan Club Mini E start the new thread.

Stoneman out please. Keeping a batsman new to the team that is massively out of form in in the side will only erode what confidence he may have left ever further. He shouldn't have been picked in the first place based on how poorly he has fared at County level this season. Were the ECB honestly expecting him to do anything else?

Anyone watching the IPL final? Our old friend Shane Watson getting out LBW absolutely murdering the Sunrisers. Brilliant innings so far.

Jennings in for Stoneman. He better have got his technique sorted because otherwise Abbas will have him LBW inside 10 overs.

Anyone else watched the Al Jazeera documentary on match fixing? There's a lot of speculation flying around on who the England players involved might be...

Some of the decision making on the running, especially toward the end, was beyond amateur hour.

We got there in the end despite some seriously irresponsible batting from the likes of Buttler and Ali. Somebody needs to have a word with Moeen in particular, there's no need to try and hit sixes when the required run rate is less than a run a ball. He has come out and basically said that he's going to ignore all negativity about the way he plays. It's called managing a chase and getting your team across the line.

That aside, Morgan and Root played very nicely, I've noticed over the years that when they get a partnership going England almost never lose. They are very good at rotating the strike which is particularly important in the middle overs.

The bowlers on both teams did very well to make it difficult for the batsmen especially as plenty of them aren't first XI picks.

Batting stats since the last World Cup.
