Urgh, of all the times to lose a wicket. Shame for Stoneman, he looked so solid, just a shame that the first hint of reverse swing has taken the ball from miles outside off to the tip of middle at the perfect height.

Vince has surpassed expectations though hopefully his let off and Stoneman getting out will reinforce his mental state and enable him to carry on.

Nice start by England but not enough runs yet to feel confident. Be interesting to see whether Root goes on the attack.

Missed 20 runs after the rain delay and the final over before tea but other than that I've also watched every ball. I'm not commenting until the close. GRcade mockers terrifies me. It's more powerful than we will ever know.

Just FFS Vince. Never ever a single there, and a ton given away. Still, well batted.

We really don't need a 35 from Mo at a run a ball, we need a ground out 80-90.

I think that's about as good as you could have expected for an opening day of an Ashes series. Lyon is getting some turn which on day one is concerning but the pitch looks to have taken a fair bit of pace out of their quicks. Well played Stoneman, Vince and Malan.

Yep - I'd say that's an even first day. You worry slightly for Day 2 as the Gabba is likely to speed up tomorrow morning. If we lose Mo/Malan/Bairstow in a tumble... you don't feel like the tail are going to enjoy a new-ish ball on a faster day 2 pitch.

Hopefully Mo/Malan will just bat through to lunch :datass:

Day 1 not a disaster which, to be honest, is a pretty big win in itself looking at previous editions.

Yup, it's a very low bar to beat but that's where it sat and England did well to beat it.

You did fear for it slightly at 2-1.

Not gone quite as well today... they really would’ve wanted 350+ here...

If we can get either of these two we're practically into their tail!
