I'd quite like to avoid a whitewash. Excuses will be forgotten over time, we'll never live down another 5-0.

Good performance today but matters not when the series is over as a competition. Would be nice to string two good days together, but I expect to wake up tomorrow all out for 200 odd and Australia somehow having a 300 lead

If we end up all out for 200, it will be a passage of play well worth watching :slol:

Not a bad knock from Cook.... ;) - Unfortunately had a nap throughout the Stuart Broad knock so missed that partnership. Shall re-watch!

I was able to watch the vast majority of today's play. I nodded off just after Malan came to the crease and came back around when Woakes had just got to the crease. At that point we were 310/6 and did not really see us being able to grind out such a lead.

-Cook, especially in the final session, was utter class. He had soaked up a lot of pressure from the Aussies in the first session and had begun to accelerate toward the end of the second session, but he really punished them near the end. He looked the Cook of old, toying with the opposition. They were at his mercy. At 180-odd when Broad came to the crease, I really feared that he was going to be left stranded short of another double-ton. Especially as he was trapped at the other end with Broad facing a never-ending barrage of bouncers. But he got there and then some. Highest score by a visiting batsmen at the MCG. 5th score of 200+. All the critics sharpening their knives can do one.

-Broad has to be commended, he's been nothing but a passenger this entire tour but this test he's upped his game. Perhaps the wickets he got on the first day gave him the confidence to give playing the bouncers a proper go. Top effort and given it's Broad, he really played for Cook at times and resisted the urge to have a mad swipe. It almost looked like he's learnt how to bat again.

-This one isn't so good. I would really like for some statto out there to look at all the instances where Root has failed to convert 50 to 100 in the last 18 months and work out the percentage of times he's got out to a good delivery. It will be very low because Root very often just gives it away by playing foolish shots. Why was he trying to pull Pat Cummins out of the ground when he and Cook were slowly grinding them down? The only way they were going to get him and Cook out on this surface was if they played poor shots and Root obliged. It's so frustrating.

Top knock from Cook, and yeah Root needs to learn how to push on from 50s, and how to stay on in the morning

Frustrating day but if we get these two out before lunch tomorrow we'll have another 68 overs, weather permitting, to bowl the rest out. When the rest is the Marsh Bros, the WK and the tail, it's entirely doable.

Cooky the first England batsman to carry the bat since Athers too.

It's down to the batsman who is next in (according to Malan). Bairstow must have wanted to get out there.

A fine day's play ruined by the last 10 minutes.

Malan impressed me again. We need him to make a century tomorrow because Mo and the tail probably won't contribute too much.

2/5. Root almost got me to 3.

Moeen makes a second baller in England's latest tour match (a match which seems to have gone completely unreported). He took 2 from 28 in his ten overs (50 over game).
40 from 48 for Jason Roy who had a horrendous Big Bash, 52 from 35 for Hales, 81* from 76 for Morgan, 28 from 26 for Buttler. No wickets for Woakes, Wood or Curran.

I most of our batting innings, it's difficult to say these give any indication of how the ODIs will go given the massive difference in the bowling attack today and what is to come, but they looked good overall. I'd imagine Root comes in for Billings, bats at 3, Morgan at 4, Hales at 5, Buttler 6.
