While it's been clear since the word go that they haven't had a bloody clue where they were going with the story in AC, they've succeeded in turning it into an incomprehensible mess in record time, and with each new character and their new found love for Templar, manage to make the Templar vs Assassin conflict more meaningless with every instalment.

A game set during the Seven Years' War? :o I'm in. I hope it includes Rogers' Rangers. :D

Yep, the series needs a complete reboot (ideally after a hiatus lasting a couple of years) and leadership with a proper vision. I don't want to see it all get shitcanned because I love the historical settings they've been choosing, but the ordering of the time periods and the sci-fi gooseberry fool and awful modern day bits have just ruined it. It needs ending and rebooting ASAP.

This does seem mildly more appealing than Unity. The story set up at least has the potential to lead the game in some interesting directions.

On the other hand;
- I have literally no interest in this time period they keep returning to;
- Having played the older AC games on PS3, I'd expect a rock solid frame rate of 12;
- I can't decide what about the protagonist is worse, the accent or the ponytail.

If this is a refinement of what Black Flag was, I will buy it. Black Flag had its problems but I enjoyed the strawberry float out of it nonetheless. I grew to really love the sailing aspect.

You might want to spoiler that last bit, SoK. I'd rather not have known that.

I've been playing catch up with Assassins Creed this year, having played 1/2/Brotherhood and some of Revelations within the space of four months starting in December. Only just started III, which I'm told will bore the arse off me, but I'd be interested in playing Rogue if only so I can see where this "Kenway Trilogy" ends as I quite like Hatham so far. To be honest I'm just gonna plough through III so I can get to Black Flag. Which should bring me up to date in time for this and Unity.

The way I see it, thanks in large part to the awful back and forth time jumping, the entire Kenway trilogy wants completely re-imagining (and it's not even completely out yet!) and probably extending too: Make the first game the one with Edward in the Caribbean (Pirates), the second a Haytham-based romp across London and parts of North America (Seven Years War; possibly wants splitting into two games), and the last one a murderous Pocahontas-esque new world-old world journey with a better acted Connor (American & French Revolutions; definitely split this one up).

It feels like I'm watching a film series in the wrong order, with potentially great characters who end up on the creative waste heap far too quickly. If they're so desperate to get modern day Assassins in there too, they should turn that entire thing into its own series of games, possibly revisiting locations already explored in the past; modern day Rome, Paris etc.

Watching that video, makes me realise how much I despise the controls, stealth and combat in the AC games. Shadow of Mordor and the Batman games really make you feel like a badass and are so much more enjoyable for it!

The problem is, I suppose, is that the games have been moving away from stealth and into the realms of an action-adventure game for some time now. So for them to implement decent controls for stealth is probably never going to happen, I'm afraid, so we will likely get such awkwardness in the future games too.

I am playing AC2 at the moment, and even that feels more low key and stealthier than what was to come. Assassin's Creed 3 really turned the game into something more bombastic and the game was less focused on the assassinations than the epic, cinematic levels that made Connor some hero of the age. He was in every event in 18th Century North America.

Yeah, Ezio gets his hands dirty, but he is more just an observer on the sidelines caught up in things, and only slipping from the shadows to stick his blade in someone's neck.

Indeed, go back to the first game and the game is more focused on stealth and staying hidden, though admittedly there isn't actually all that much to do in-game.

I have said this countless times, but I would like each mission to be a bit lengthier and be based around just one target. The bot before would be gathering intel, and how much you did and how well you did it would determine how hard the hit was. It would be like the old Hitman games where there were an dozen equally viable options. Plus, for the disinterested you could always just fight through them like you do now, but you wouldn't get as much synch %. You could even have it like Crackdown were all the targets exist in the game world at once, and they react to your actions like Shadow of Mordor (I haven't played that game, but it's system seems a good fit for AC, in that botched assassinations can bring you further unwanted recognition when going after another).

The first game sort of did this, with its 9 targets and fairly open assassinations, but they still didn't go deep or involved enough. Plus the busy work before hand was repetitive and dull and the same thing 9 times. It also didn't make much difference to the assassinations.

AC 3 would have been great for this, given the fact that the game also resided around approximately 9 targets set out at the start of the game. Instead we got a very restrictive, narrative-based approach were anything different or off the mission path is met with desynchronization.

I will still get Rogue I think, largely because I don't own the newer consoles and I do like my AC fix each year. For the most part, though yearly installments are unnecessary they have kept the quality up - I thought Black Flag would be expansion pack stuff but it was a great game in its own right and most see it as a return to form.

And whilst I like the games they have become, they have strayed quite far from their initial concept and stealth roots.

With AC 1 the game itself was a massive let down, but I find the actual assassinations to be the best in the series.

Not sure about that. I remember I would get myself into a nice vantage point above someone and think how simply it would be to simply jump down and kill them. Of course, the game would not let you do that. II was grate because it gave you the ability to do air and ledge assassinations rather than just walking up to someone and hoping you can stab them because every guard in the area recognised your hideously obvious costume. They also got rid of having to run back to your base while the whole city goes mental; in two it was fairly simple to just blend in with the crowd and casually walk your way to safety, rather than being constantly chased like you were in a Benny Hill sketch.

Rogue's great, but having 100%ed it on 360, I can't see me going back again.

It's actually an alright game, was the last bit enjoyment I had out of the series before unity permently crushed my spirit.
