It's just going to be a gaming PC. A rebranded Lenovo or something.

I'll be amazed if it is; Atari aren't exactly loaded with cash. I anticipate this being some kinda 2600 / 7800 console with, say, sixty games built in. If it plays "newer" stuff like ST and Jaguar, maybe it will have slightly more tech oomph to it.

Sorry, I meant that it's just going to a PC from someone like Lenovo but sold under the Atari name.

I used Lenovo as an example because I don't think they have an established gaming brand. Dell have Alienware and HP are trying to revive the Omen name.

They've already confirmed it's based on modern PC hardware.

Might be worth updating the thread title to reflect this.

The jaguar by today's standards should be a piece of piss to copy surely.
The cheap as chips Amazon tablets most likely piss all over them from a hardware point of view and they cost £50 and have a screen.

I'm not trying to argue but saying the ST and Jaguar stuff is newer just seems bonkers. I bet I could get the PC guys on here to build a basic pc with 10 times the jaguar performance for something crazy like £80 and that's using retail pricing.

It's all relative, Peter - the Jaguar launched in 1993 whilst the VCS launched in 1977. By using the phrases "newer" (in speech marks) and "slightly more tech oomph", I wasn't really suggesting that a great leap in technical power was required... more observing that something a wee bit more capable would be needed than for the older kit :) .

Now I just feel old as I was 18 when the Jaguar launched :slol: .

I was into my twenties 8-) .

I never owned a VCS / 2600 at the time because the games were so expensive (usually £29.99... back in 1980  ) but I did play a few of the games on friends' consoles. They were fantastic fun at the time but, to be honest, I fear that I wouldn't play most of them for more than a few minutes nowdays. I was fond of Adventure, Combat, Pitfall and River Raid, though  .

Did the Jaguar have any exclusive games even worth re-releasing/emulating?

I was 12 when the Jaguar launched.

I always thought both you and Peter were roughly the same age as me.

Our objective is to create a new product that stays true to our heritage while appealing to both old and new fans of Atari.

Inspired by classic Atari design elements (such as the iconic use of wood, ribbed lines, and raised back); we are creating a smooth design, with ribs that flow seamlessly all around the body of the product, a front panel that can be either wood or glass, a front facing logo, indicator lights that glow through the material, and an array of new ports (HDMI, 4xUSB, SD). We intend to release two editions: a wood edition, and a black/red edition..

As you can guess, those ports suggest modern internal specs. It also means that while we will be delivering classic gaming content, we will also be delivering current gaming content.

I think we need a little more info than "current gaming content". Free to play iOS games like Candy Crush or Clash of Clans are "current gaming content". It's such a vague term and could mean virtually anything.

Bear in mind they have confirmed it uses modern PC hardware, so an Android box or retro console is out of the question.

Tempest 2000. That at the time was a game considered worth buying the console for.

I wonder if they've opted for the Steambox model as if so and this can indeed run steam games then this is may be an essential buy for me.
I liked the idea of Steambox but I never felt it got and love from from the people making it so maybe this is the next iteration of the idea.

Judging by the size of the ports, this is going to be a big console.

If they are going with PC parts that looks like it could house a pretty decent graphics card.
What's the best bang for buck card that could be included in this so maybe about £100 at a stretch?

£100 for the card or whole thing? If the card, they could probably put a 1050ti in. You can pick these up for around £130 so I would assume an integrated GPU in the motherboard + bulk discount would make this possible.

If you are talking about £100 for the whole thing then you will only be playing old games on it.

I was thinking about £100 for the card if they plan to play any sort of modern pc games at a reasonable level.
