I think it could be both, Preezy. It will come pre-loaded with lots of Atari retro games but, technically, it is a Linux-based PC. I don’t think we’re gonna be seeing Red Dead Redemption 2 running on it, but it seems that lots of mid-range games may be a possibility.

Changing the thread title would avoid this confusion ;)

I was thinking the same thing. I'm pretty sure they said it wasn't just a retro system almost from the get go.

Atari have confirmed several times that this is a modern AMD Radeon PC based system.

Yes but will it play Sonic?

It doesn't even appear to be that interesting.

If this was just an Android TV box but with more powerful guts than the Shield TV then it could be a good way to use emulators on your TV while sitting on your comfy couch.

I just don't see the value in what they are offering here. We need way more details.

Behold Amstrad’s official Mega PC. This was actually a thing!

The thread title

To clarify, its based on AMD PC architecture just like PS4 and XBO and will play BOTH modern and retro games.

If it can actually play steam games then this could be an amazing bargain but I'm pretty certain it won't so I fail to see the point.

Hmm.

The hardware inside the box might be similar to a PC, but its not 'A new PC' and it definitely is 'to do with retro gaming'.

Topic title doesn't make a lot of sense.

I don't really understand what's hard to understand about it. It's basically a new console. The price puts it in the range of a PS4 or Xbox 1 it's probably about as powerful as a PS4 PRO. it's going to run it's own custom Linux software but it won't be officially modable. The USP is there's going to be a ton of old Atari games.

It's going to get crushed.

The make or break is going to be what the 'current titles' are. Are we talking original/exclusive games that people want? Ports of existing AAA titles that are also on the Xbox One, PS4 and Switch? Ports of Android games?

My guess is their going to aim for current triple A titles, Call of Duty, Fifa that kind of thing. I just don't think there going to get a large enough audience to get other big companies to release stuff for the machine.

Go look at gog.com or Steam and see what games have a Linux version available. I'd imagine thats what they mean by current titles.

The idea could have some promise but like the stillborn launch of Steam Machines I'm struggling to see why anyone outside the enthusiast market would choose this over a basic Windows 10 mini PC like a NUC.

I love the dinky design that makes nods to the heritage of the old Atari. However these retro games are so old they are just curios and are not likely to entertain anybody for a proper amount of time. Yes it may well have an AMD chip etc but where does it stand in the marketplace? Another Android console that is invalidated by the Apple TV 4K ($179), Fire TV, Roku, Nvdia Shield Ouya etc? It may be that it's for hardcore gamers but at that price it puts in touching distance of the Nintendo Switch. This will only sell to hardcore & nostalgic gamers who have that extra-level of disposable income, it's too niche to be a hit or even make a profit. I'd still like to play one though!

You must be a riot at parties.

Hmm.

The parties he goes to might be similar to the parties you go to, but he does not 'riot' and it definitely isn't fun 'to fight and break things'.

Your post doesn't make a lot of sense.

I miss the good old days when it seemed like every other week some company would come out with it's own system.

Been looking into the PC Engine, Amiga CD32 and a few other older systems that never made much of an impact over here and some of them are really interesting. Thinking about picking one or two up and building up a collection of weird and wonderful titles.

So, er, have we decided what it is yet?

Did CD32 have many exclusive titles? I'm pretty sure since the machine was essentially an Amiga 1200 that most of the games were Amiga ports.
