It seems that Atari is going to reveal some kind of retro console soon.

Very little detail at this stage... but, hey, it's cool to think that Atari (albeit I know the company isn't really Atari any more) is going to try and bring something to the gaming market.

I wonder what consoles / games will be emulated? I could imagine that developing a controller that would suit 2600, 7800, ST, Lynx and Jaguar would be challenging!

Updated info 01-May-2018
The company has partnered with AMD who provides the Atari VCS custom processor with Radeon Graphics Technology. The Atari VCS platform will offer support for 4K resolution, HDR and 60FPS content, onboard and expandable storage options, dual-band WiFi and Bluetooth 5.0, as well as USB 3.0 support. A complete list of Atari VCS product specs will be posted with the pre-sale.

The updated Classic Joystick and new Modern Controller for the Atari VCS are being developed in partnership with leading video game peripherals maker Power A. Both items will be available in select packages and as standalone purchases.

Retro-inspired, but not a "retro-box," the Atari VCS will be a fully customizable entertainment experience. This means access to a vast array of games, media and streaming content options. As an homage to the past, Atari VCS covers the classics with the included Atari Vault of more than 100 classic games, including all-time arcade and home entertainment favorites like Asteroids®, Centipede®, Breakout®, Missile Command®, Gravitar® and Yars' Revenge®; a growing list of games, especially a full range of popular modern titles, will be announced at later dates.

If they release Jaguar games on it does that mean it'll need a Jaguar controller?

The official Atari Twitter account has confirmed that Ataribox is real... although there is still no news on what it actually is!

In the wake of the NES Classic I can't really see this being anything other than another plug and play 2600 with a bunch of games built in to it, perhaps with a cartridge slot too.

If that is what it turns out to be than I don't really see the appeal as there have been several such systems before at least one of which that could be reverse engineered into a fully functional 2600 anyway.

The only other logical option for me would be perhaps be an official emulator app on consoles and PC with downloadable games available at low prices.

So it looks like this is based on PC hardware (similar to PS4/XBO).

Maybe they could calve a niche by providing downloadable 2800/5200/7800/Lynx/Jaguar games, other than that I can't see it being successful.

Are there still any Atari games worth playing?

I can vouch for Warlords and Combat. It's a shame that these don't have online versions. Some impressive stretching of the console in that video in my opinion.

I also have a soft spot for Star Voyager:

H.E.R.O. is still a great game although I prefer the SG-1000 version to the 2600 and Kaboom is still a lot of fun.

Don't atari already have a range of retro consoles on the market? This has to be a little bit more than that. My guess is that it'll be some kind under powered budget thing like the oyae.

It's already been confirmed that it will be a new console based on PC hardware, Jaws just hasn't updated the thread title.

Yeah, I saw that but I'm guessing it'll be a cheaper more low powered pc than either the xbone or ps4 and cater to the indie crowd with easy development access.

It's not really Atari. It's a company that owns the Atari name.

Don't they mostly knock out crappy mobile phone games these days?

So far this year, I have eaten NO mince pies.

They're owned by infogrames and they've sold most of their ip stuff.

Edit: Owning atari makes these companies go a bit crazy. I think next time they go bankrupt EA should buy them and just toss them next to all those other companies they've murdered.
