That's exactly what I don't want. I play a lot of retro games but I can likely count on one hand the number of 2600 games I'd play for more than 5 minutes. It's not retro it's archaic.

That said I've always been curious about 7800, Lynx and Jaguar.

They would be better putting these games onto Steam. That way anyone could play them (I very much doubt anyone is using a PC not capable of emulating these platforms) and as an added bonus, achievements etc would be available. Yet another platform that only offers old stuff interesting for only historical reasons is going to flop. Maybe they could do a limited qty release like the NES and SNES mini, unless of course they are planning on burying the excess in the desert next to ET.

Yes?

I could easily buy into a system that play's 400/800, ST, Jag and Lynx games. Not a chance on 2600 system.

Wor lass playing her favourite Jag game a few weeks back after I had connected it after 10+ years of sitting on a shelf (the Jag that is, not work lass).

Ataribox will be powered by an AMD customized processor, with Radeon Graphics technology. It'll run Linux, with a customized, easy-to-use user interface. This approach means that as well as being a great gaming device, Ataribox is also a full PC experience for the TV, bringing you streaming, applications, social, browsing, music, and more.

Most TV devices have closed systems and content stores. Linux lets us be more open; you can access & customise the OS, & you can access games you've bought from other content platforms (if compatible with the OS and HW).
There will be tons of classic Atari retro games pre-loaded, & current titles from a range of studios (we'll start talking titles very soon, stay tuned).

We plan on shipping late Spring 2018, with an expected price range of $249-$299 (depending on specific editions & memory configurations).

 . I’d thought that this was gonna be a cheap device for playing old Atari games... not a challenger (in pricing terms) for current gen consoles. I would love this console to be successful but, unless it is far more powerful than it appears, I just can’t see it.

Great price.

Atari confirmed months ago that it would be based on modern PC hardware, I even quoted you

I'm unsure I see the point in using modern PC architecture.
Who is going to buy this to put anything on it as it's going to be underpowered to entice the PC crowd but too expensive for the retro crowd.
If this was a cheap steambox I could maybe understand but it won't be so who is this aimed at?

They should have replicated Nintendo and just made a cheap unit that plays retro games with some overhead so moders can play about with it and it would have sold just fine.

At about £100, maybe £150, I'd have been in. But £250? strawberry float that noise.

The first (partial!) screen shot? You can’t see much, but I like the VCS package images.

Half the price of an X1X and a copy of Forza 7.

Bargain...

Yeah, I think the pricing could be an issue... although we don’t yet know what games are included nor the full tech capabilities of the console.

In this photo, I think that is Limbo running in the background?

Wait I don't get it, is this thing just meant to be a modern way to play old Atari games? Or is it like a Steambox thing?

A bit of both I think. As I understand things it will be pre-loaded with a bunch of old Atari games but will also feature more current content, which I still think is suspiciously vague since current content could mean just about anything.

I think it could be both, Preezy. It will come pre-loaded with lots of Atari retro games but, technically, it is a Linux-based PC. I don’t think we’re gonna be seeing Red Dead Redemption 2 running on it, but it seems that lots of mid-range games may be a possibility.

Changing the thread title would avoid this confusion ;)
