Anyone watch the documentary on Usain Bolt on BBC yesterday?

Watching it on iPlayer now, it's pretty amazing to see where he lives.

There was also another documentary on last night 'Can Anyone Beat Bolt' on BBC3, it was really good too. Interesting to look at the likes of Powell, Blake and Gay especially.

Greatest Olympic moments is on 3 tonight at 10 too.

Booked some days off work today for the first week, getting in the mood

Yeah I watched this too, as well as the documentary on on the Ben Johnson / Carl Lewis race.

Is this the first one you mentioned: http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b0 ... Man_Alive/ :?:

Well that was quality, amazed they got all of them to talk about it. Linford Christie has kind of been hard done by in his career, Carl Lewis was all over his lane in 88 and I always thought he was very hard done by with the false start in 96.

I thought Johnson's viewpoint was a little funny. He seems to deny that Carl Lewis was a better athlete, and justifies it by saying "I beat him." :fp:

This is also very interesting, the evolution of the 100m sprint: http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/p0 ... 00_Metres/

Watched Bolt's 200m WR today again. strawberry float it's so sick. No one is beating that for a few years I don't think. It's incredible.

Something I didn't know until recently is that Yohan Blake has also beaten Michael Johnson's old WR time, second fastest ever and only 7 noob seconds behind Bolt's WR.

Yeah it's quite surprising, he's come a long way in what seems like no time at all really.

What I noted about Blake's run is that his start seemed pretty standard. In comparison, the start that Bolt got for his WR just seems colossal, even when taking into account the relativity of his opponents. He is ahead of the guy in the lane outside mid way through the bend whereas Blake doesn't take the lead of his race until just over half way. This lead me to believe that Blake's second half of the race was quicker than Bolt's, so I decided to try my hand at some amateur analysis. I took screenshots at the same mark (the 4x100 relax line) during Johnson's 19:32, Bolt's 19:19 and Blake's 19:26. The pictures are in that order.

Look at the difference in time when they reached this mark during their personal bests. We can see that Bolt's run has the best start, that Johnson's first and second halves of the race were fairly consistent. But it also shows us that Blake is an absolute beast in the latter half of the race, and probably has an advantage in terms of speed endurance, or simply put, he is able to hold his top speed for a longer period of time in comparison with other sprinters whose speed will naturally decrease toward the end of the race.

Makes this 200m so much more interesting knowing that Bolt won't just stroll it.

That's an interesting point - in the Bolt documentary the other evening, Bolt mentioned in passing how much harder Blake actually trains.

Based on Bolt's build, I'd say he has more to give in the 200m. His 100m time is near enough exactly half of his 200m time, but that doesn't necessarily follow for someone of his size/build. I would expect him to be putting in a proportionally quicker 200m time than his 100m time, simply because of what he loses at the start (for ages, Michael Johnson was the fastest guy on the planet; his 19.32 was quicker than the 100m record x 2).

As you imply, though, Bolt is possibly let down by his endurance: otherwise, I think he could potentially be running sub 9.5 and sub 19, which is a very, very scary thought.

I think we're going to see something very, very special - I only hope the conditions are perfect on the nights of the finals.
