Several people have been injured in Nice after a truck reportedly ploughed into a crowd in an apparent attack, according to AFP.

Several people are reported to have been injured.

BFMTV is reporting that shots have also been heard.

The incident took place as revelers gathered for a fireworks display celebrating France's annual Bastille Day.

Footage has emerged of hundreds of panicked people running from the scene of the apparent attack.

"People are running. It's panic. The lorry mounted the Prom, he drove over everyone," a journalist on the scene for local newspaper Nice Martin reported.

"Everyone is bleeding - there are loads of people injured, without doubt."

An AFP reporter described seeing a white van driving at high speed onto the famed Promenade des Anglais as people were leaving after the annual Bastille Day celebration display.

"We saw people hit and bits of debris flying around," he said.

Le Parisien saying gunshots have been exchanged between police and the driver. They're showing an image of bodies strewn across the street.

BBC News wrote:A lorry has struck a crowd during Bastille Day celebrations in the southern French city of Nice, media reports and witnesses say.

The incident took place on the Promenade des Anglais during a firework display, the reports said.

One image on Twitter showed about a dozen people lying on the street, some being tended to.

The local prefecture has urged people in the area to remain indoors, calling the incident "an attack".

Some reports spoke of shots being fired but these have not been confirmed.

Social media video showed people running through the streets in panic following the incident.

A journalist with the Nice Matin newspaper reported from the scene that there was "a lot of blood and without doubt many injured".

Another image on Twitter showed a white lorry stopped in the middle of the promenade with damage to its front, and four police officers observing it while taking cover behind a palm tree.

Starting to think we need a 'terrorist thread', depressingly.

I don't think we should be making puns about such a horrific event, guys. :(

It just isn't very Nice.

The worrying thing about this is that you can't stop it happening anywhere, any time; the only deterrent is concrete and metal bollards in front of important buildings (such is the case in Westminster).

'The lorry mounted the Prom, and then proceeded to just drive over everyone,' a local journalist has said.

It's GTA come to life again.

Karl!

A horrid and cowardly attack on ordinary people who are out celebrating.
As seems to be the norm there are loads of armed police in London and my patch. They likely have info of credible threats.

I was just watching the conclusion to the fireworks around the Eiffel tower on TV at around 10:10 and was thinking this would be a prime night for it.

Yep, as seems the norm now any tragedy is available to view in all its gory detail pretty much immediately.

I've seen at least 2 videos on there which are extremely graphic and disturbing just plonked into peoples tweets without warning. I suppose if you click you should know what you are letting yourself in for though.

EDIT - Thankfully, just a fireworks accident, unrelated to the attack.

Was at EuroDisney a few months back and though the same...they do a firework display thing on the Friday or Saturday night and it is just chocka with 1000's of people. The security seemed non existent when I was there as well. I actually took my hiking daypack to use there and forgot my large fixed blade knife was in the top compartment...my bag went through the scanner at least 6 times whilst I was there and it was never picked up.

It's best to avoid watching any of that if you can possibly help it. Nobody needs stuff like that rattling around their heads. Watching live coverage on Sky News now. All very disturbing and getting worse by the moment.
