An explosion that ripped through a busy Manhattan neighbourhood injuring at least 29 people was an "intentional act", according to the authorities.

However, New York Mayor Bill De Blasio said there was no evidence the blast in the fashionable Chelsea district was terrorism-related.

Police searching the area, following the explosion, found a possible "secondary device" nearby.

It has been reported it appeared to be a pressure cooker connected to a mobile phone with wires attached.

A piece of paper with writing on it was also found close by, according to CNN.

Mr De Blasio said early indications were that the explosion was "an intentional act".

But he added: "There is no evidence at this point of a terror connection.

"There is no specific and credible threat against New York City at this point in time from any terror organisation."

However, a Joint Terrorism Task Force, made up of federal, state and local officials, has been called in to investigate the blast, indicating the authorities have not ruled out the possibility of a terror link.

No evidence of a terror connection for someone intentionally planting and setting off an explosive device, trololololol. So basically, terrorism = IS. Someone either needs to come up with a new word or update the OED, it seems.

He was probably just trying to make the first ever Smart Pressure Cooker and there's been a misunderstanding.

If there's currently no evidence that this was related to a terrorist organisation I don't see much wrong with stating that. ISIS at this stage are like a local politician who'd take the credit for the opening of a can of tuna where they'll try and claim ownership of any act of violence they can. the If this turns out to be an act targeted at someone either living in the building or at the owner of the building but that only becomes clear in a week's time then why let ISIS claim credit for an act of terrorism in New York? Last thing we want is more fuel for the anti-muslim fearmongers like Trump and those Breitbart windowlickers.

Just because it isn't ISIS doesn't mean it isn't terrorism.

Also anyone can claim to do anything for ISIS without having to sign off a form or get approval. They actively encourage people to go out and do mad gooseberry fool on their own.

Yeah I have also noticed the media seem to have equated to terrorism being an IS exclusive term. It's probably a domestic terrorist on the lines of the Boston Bombing or Timothy McVeigh.

Allhu ackbar!

Copy & pasted from sky (sue me)

A suspect being hunted over the Manhattan and New Jersey bombings is in custody after a shootout.

Ahmad Khan Rahami, a naturalised US citizen from Afghanistan, was being sought over the attacks at the weekend.

Two police officers were injured in the shooting - one was hit in the chest while wearing a bullet-proof vest and the other in the hand in Linden, New Jersey. They are both expected to recover.

Oh good they caught him. Too often these banana splits die in a shootout or by blowing themselves up. No sympathy for these pricks. If you've got beef with foreign policy, don't take it out on civilians.

No, I don't think so. He'll probably get a life term. And he should. No quick death and virgins in Valhalla or wherever the strawberry float he was planning on going.

I expect he'll be quietly packed off to gitmo to be waterboarded for information for the next half-century.
