Axiom Verge is a side-scroller action-adventure game game where the player will control Trace, a man who after suffering a fatal injury wakes up in an ancient and high-tech world. The game focuses on action and exploration, and will feature over 60 items and power-ups. The gameplay borrows elements from classic games such as Metroid, Contra, Blaster Master, and Bionic Commando, among others.

Really enjoying what I've played so far, likely game of the year contender for me on its current track. As it happens its the boss at the top of the page currently giving me some grief.

I've only played past the first two bosses so far, but I'm enjoying it a lot. I can't see it beating Ori for me in the Metroidvania stakes, but it's it's a very different kind of game really.

Well I think Ori might have something to say about being best metroidvania (horrible term) but it does look great and retro.

Two things are really bugging me about this game.

I don't get why there are so many weapons/items that do so little. I've only beaten four (maybe five?) bosses so far but I haven't had to use any of the guns I've found against them. The basic one has been plenty and in most cases was better. Most of them seem optional and I know you could stumble upon bosses before you have them, but better games get past that by giving the item some use beyond 'is a gun wot shoots a bit different'. I didn't think this was going to be a problem after the second weapon but there's at least one I've never used and another that's painfully weak. Also, notes. The strawberry float? When I solve a tough area I don't want to be rewarded with - seemingly - some plot that I can't even read yet because it's in strawberry floating wingdings. At least the guns give me options, albeit not very good ones.

More importantly, Trace isn't much fun to play as. I'm hoping it improves like Ori did when you start getting movement abilities but I can't help but feel this game is going in a different direction. The morphball analogue being a headcrab-like friend rather than some extension of the character (y cant axiom crawl etc) is a perfect example - I want fluidity and pace of movement, not stop-start gameplay. The 'walk through single-block walls' powerup is exactly the same, you're just standing around waiting for it to activate. It's not exactly Samus comboing walljumps, shinesparking and whatever else, is it? Even chaining shield dashes or air dashes in SotN, though probably not intented as primary methods of movement, are there for players who want them. It feels like the skill cap is painfully low compared to the games it's trying to emulate. Shovel Knight, Ori and Wings of Vi all nailed movement for their own little worlds, I don't think AV has in the same way.

It feels like this game used the structure of a Metroidvania without figuring out all the things that made those games fun.

When is this hitting Vita? I love the sound of it but don't have a PS4. I bet it would look glorious on a HDTV.

The beginning bits (from the GB quick look) really remind me of Super Metroid. Might wait for a sale though - you have to wonder if it was a great idea releasing this a week after everyone became obsessed with Bloodborne.

I like this, but it seems a little ambiguous in when to use what ability. You end up just running the glitch gun almost constantly because you're so uncertain when it will or won't work and what effect it'll have.

Started this on PC, having a great time so far. The way everything is so alien reminds of Another World, but obviously steeped in Super Metroid style gameplay. I do think this is harder than Super Metroid though.

We should migrate GRcade to Flarum. :toot:

Got this on switch today. Had it on ps4 but stopped a few hours in as I realised I should have got it on vita instead.

Anyway, it's bloody great. Put about 3 hours in I think. Really suits the switch and looks great on the screen.

Not cross save though. I wanted to be able to play at work with the vita and home on the tv with the same save.

Just beat the wasp type thing boss. Was pretty damn hard, little floaters who popped out every now and then did more damage than him most of the time.

Just picked up the trench coat so now I can short range teleport, plus I can also now swap places with my drone. Really looking forward to the exploration the latter opens up :toot:

Loving this, feels like I'm close to the end so I'm scouring everywhere for secrets.
