Backup

I haven't really thought about backup before as I didn't really think I had any data that was that important. I normally just email important files to myself and use my inbox as a cloud. I did the odd backup here and there for photos and the like but have never had a formal system in place to actually recover anything I lost, it was more when moving stuff from PC to PC and phone to phone.

What do people do? Do you pay for a service or just use a free one? Is it just cloud storage or do you have physical copies? Do you have an automated mechanism or just at a reminder and shift files across manually?

For personal files just get a Dropbox and copy stuff you want to back up into your Dropbox folder.

iCloud to back up all my phone stuff, bookmarks etc.

Works well, you tell it what drives to backup and it keeps things up to date automatically.

I don't really store anything any more and just access from the cloud on google drive, however in the past when I had a lot of stuff to backup I used to use LiveDrive as my backup service, they let me backup whatever folders I wanted without having to reorganise or copy stuff and and store as much as I wanted.

Only thing of value to me are photographs, they're kept on both my laptop and an external hard drive. Might be worthwhile putting them on dropbox or googledocs though too I guess, in case I drop my laptop on my hard drive and kill them both.

Dropbox Pro(i think?)
1TB storage, i put everything in the folder that i might want to keep in future. all photos/videos from my phone auto-backup to it when i charge the phone w/ wi-fi
costs £70 or so a year, so less than £10 a month - best 'tech' decision i ever made.

Bought a pack of 16GB USBs that came with 2 of each colour, which has made organisation super easy

I just do it manually occasionally

(Yes, I know you can of course switch to another service, but they rely on that inertia of people just paying up instead of having to faff around moving.)

As long as you are cool with migrating it doesn't matter.

Sure the average users get confused etc. but if you aren't the average user you should use whatever service is the best / cheapest etc. and prime photos isn't bad, it could do with collaborative albums but that's coming I think so seems good to use it for backup when it means not having to drop quality.

Excellent ideas, thank you all! I've always been a bit iffy about subscribing to my own data backups, but it may be the way to go. If you stop paying for Dropbox, for instance, how long do they keep your data for before deleting it? I'd hate to have a direct debit issue and lose everything. I had my wedding photos backed up to Onedrive before they dropped the storage by 10GB. When they did drop it down, I was really stressed that I may lose some of my backed up data as I was slightly over the limit. As it happened they just made it read only until I was back under, but for a company that only does cloud storage I imagine they can't let people store read only indefinitely...

As a physical backup I'm considering getting a photo frame (or an old tablet) and putting a big memory card in it. That way my photos will be stored but also on display.

Another thing I've been trying to get through is the absolute mess of photos I have. I am terrible for actually deleting photos I don't want (photographed receipts, unsuccessful attempts at photos, that sort of thing - God knows how many crap photos I took when I was in New York!), so I have no idea how much data I actually have to back up. By the time I'm finished I'll probably only need a floppy disk :lol:

OneDrive is a Microsoft product. If you subscribe to Office 365 you get 1TB of OneDrive storage as part of the plan.
