Balatro is extremely good. Seriously, it’s great. Out today on every major platform except your phone.

It costs £12.79 and there’s a demo on Steam if you want to try before you buy (anyone’s PC should be able to run the demo). Also a great fit for the Steam Deck!

I have been following this one from a distance for a while now. It looks pretty good.

Isn't every game of poker technically a roguelike?

Hm. I can't go along with this.

Anyway, just to be clear, you don't play poker in this. You combine cards to make poker hands to score but you're not playing against anyone/anything other than a target score and there's no betting. The crux of the game is to basically break the scoring system with modifiers to maximise your points. Poker is just the theme of the Roguelite Deckbuilder.

Seems fun so far. It's more like poker themed Yahtzee.

Loving this but...I've some questions.

WTF is an Ante? and also if I get a card from a pack how is it used?

An ante is a set of 3 rounds (where you either play against a blind or skip). A run is made up of 8 antes (at first).

Tarot cards usually change the properties of cards in your deck. You play them by first selecting the cards you want to upgrade from your hand then selecting the card (I think the tutorial covers that).

Planet cards you can just play when you get them, they upgrade the scoring of particular hands you play. There is likely a reason to keep them in your space in the top right instead of playing but I haven’t come across it yet.

Spectral cards change your deck in wilder ways. Often they just apply to random cards but if they target specific cards, you pick them the same way you pick for tarots.

Watched a two hour stream of this last night, and I just had to pick it up this morning. Fantastic game with so many possibilities. Ramen and Four Fingers carrying me to victory on my last run. :datass:

Got a boss round earlier with a 50K target which restricted my scoring to one type of hand. Was doing a straight build so tried to make straights but got utterly strawberry floated over by card draws. Lost by 300 chips, it was infuriating.

Thanks for the recommendation. I hadn't heard of this until I read the thread. Bought it today and I'm loving it.

Just won my first run! Beat the final boss with one hand!

Sounds great. But I'm still to give Inscryption my full attention, so this will have to join the queue.

Nice, I also got my first victory on Wednesday night, after reaching the final blind a couple of times and coming up short.

(Most of this was the Legendary Joker I pulled at work. 2x mult for every king and queen. The monster hand that won it was a full house of 3K and 2Q, with one of the kings being glass and 2 steel cards in hand, and one of the jokers gave +8 mult for each face card. So it went 2x (glass), (+8, 2x) 5 times, then 1.5x twice)
