The same thing happened to me before when using the deposit box at Natwest, luckily I was only posting a cheque for $10 as I couldn't be bothered to queue. It's only a fiver so I didn't chase it up after it went missing, but I never use the deposit boxes now.

Money deposited in Deposit boxes can sometimes take upwards of three working days to show on your account. They possibly can't find the actual notes because that process has already begun. There is a good chance that by Friday, you'll see it in your account. Bare this in mind before your rip some poor counter staff a new one...

Or it could be lost, who knows?

Maybe you didn't say thank you to the cashier!

That's what I did wrong :fp:

Really? No way!

If this is true, you owe it to the internet to document this epic self-pwnage.

Its a harsh lesson to learn but i woul never drop off money in one of them, a cheque is different, but with cash i wouldn't risk it!

The small halifax near me forces you to use the deposit envelopes for anything less than £100. It's crap, you get no proof and you're just posting an envelope through a little flap. There's absolutely no proof that you'd deposited anything. What pissed me off even more was the the place was empty and the cashiers were sat having a chinwag. They could've taken my money no problem.

I always thought that cash would appear instantly in your account. It does when I put it in over the counter and whenever I've used HSBC's machines it's always appeared immediately as I check the balance before and after I put it in.

On the bright side, some poor cashier on minimum wage will finally be able to afford a PS3, he's being eyeing up ever since he saw the footage of Killzone 2.

I hope it's gooseberry fool, that'll learn the strawberry floater.

I know it's not the most failsafe method, but I was under the impression there was a bit you can fill in and rip off to keep for yourself on the back of them. (I'm sure they have them in Barclays, or Natwest. One of the two...) You fill in how much you deposited and the date.

I've never used one, thankfully A & L won't refuse to take any small amounts over the counter but that sounds seriously gooseberry fool dude. I would go with those advising waiting or at the very least asking politely in branch how long it usually takes for deposited money to go through the system. If you go in with a query like that then it should flag up with them that something might have gone amiss somewhere rather then you just going in and declaring outright that they've lost your money. What I think I'm trying to say is that you want them on your side, not on the defensive. :)

I use the cash deposit machines at Halifax and they aseem really good. There is no envelope, you just put your money through the slot and it takes awhile to count it then it asks you if what it has counted is correct and there you go and it also prints off a receipt.

Yeah I use that, I think I know what Suzz is talking about though, is it like a little letter box with no machinery? I always thought that looked dodgy, there is a little slip on the envelope that you're supposed to pull off and keep though. :(

At HBOS when you put the money in the envelope there's a bit to rip of that's your receipt. It has a reference number that matches the one on the main part of the envelope. So you always have to remember to take that off before you post it through the box. I deposit money this way all the time.

normally you could claim it from your bank. it might be a bit difficult to prove there was an error, though.

Make sure to threaten to change banks once it comes to fisticuffs.
