It's a Sony Vaio, which means you can get a better non-Sony laptop for cheaper.

The VPC-E series are excellent value for money. Sure, you can get something for cheaper but this argument is bollocks. You can buy a cheaper car than a BMW but you'd prefer the Beemer over the Ford Escort Estate, right?

It's a nice chassis and a great design. Better than the plasticy tacky Dell's, Asus's & Acer's of this world. I'd be amazed if you couldn't get that model cheaper on Amazon though.

Just noticed that particular E series has an AMD CPU. I'd look for Intel based varient if I were you. Better performance & battery life...

Buying any laptop now that isnt Sandy Bridge based is just a straight up wack thing to be doing.

Acer laptops are superb, and yes, Sony are overpriced. Avoid.

How about suggesting a better laptop for Robbo (and anyone else reading that may be interested in getting a laptop but not sure which to get) instead of just slagging off this one.

I'd avoid Acer - badly made cheap garbage. Out of the 5 Acer laptops friends and family bought all broke within a year and all broke after the warranty expired. I'm surprised they are even allowed to sell such gooseberry fool.

Acer near enough admitted they make cheap crap, so yeah, avoid them. They're trying to get out of that business now and move towards Ultrabooks.

FWIW, my Sister has that laptop in the OP and it's fine. Nicely built, good screen, fine for word processing and what not. One of the better laptops I've used.

My brother has an Acer laptop. Good spec for the price, but the built in speakers are dreadful, not sure if that's cause it's a 15.6" laptop or because it was a laptop for £399, but my HP laptop bought in 08 for £550 (17" heavy strawberry floater) has more more warmth and bass to the sound. By comparison, his speakers are just soooo tinny it pisses me off to hear them being used.

I'm a fan of ASUS, Lenovo, Toshiba and if you're spending above £650 then getting a custom spec laptop from PCspecialist.

I'd go for this if I wanted something around £400-450: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Lenovo-G570-15- ... 976&sr=1-4 Lenovo G570 15.6" (Intel i5 2430M 2.4GHz, RAM 4GB, HDD 500GB, Windows 7 Home Premium 64 Bit)

Ignore these gimps. Vaios are quality laptops.

We've had a lot of laptops in our family over the years and the only ones to never have gone wrong are my old Macbook, our 2 Vaios and my dad's IBM Thinkpads. HP, for example, are bloody hopeless.

My sister has near enough that same model, which she bought about 18 months ago and she's been happy enough with it, although she wants to take it to Uni and stuff and it's a bit big for that. The isolated keyboard (gaps between keys) is fantastic and I coudn't go back to using a normal one even if I wanted too (or I could, it'd just annoy the hell out of me). I don't know why more laptop manufacturers don't use them.

They can be quite expensive (that one doesn't seem too bad) but when I bought mine there was a 10% off voucher along with the fact that if you buy straight from Sony, they give one component upgrade away for free every week. I happened to get a 50 quid upgrade that I wanted anyway for free, and so saved about 100 quid all told.

A quick look at the Sony Style site throws up this for the same price:

Configured
Intel® Pentium® B950, 2.10GHz
Genuine Windows® 7 Home Premium
39.5cm LCD 1366 x 768 + webcam
Intel® HD Graphics
500 GB Serial ATA (5400 rpm)
4 GB 1333MHz DDR3-SDRAM
DVD disc drive
Office 2010 Starter
No protection

Probably worse than the spec you've posted, though.

Oh, and if you buy straight from Sony they assemble it in Japan and post it to you, so you have to wait about 2 weeks.

Dell or ASUS if you want a quality laptop these days (I haven't had any personal experience with Acer so can't comment on them). I was thinking about buying a Vaio a few years ago until I shopped around and realised how ridiculously overpriced they are for the specs you get compared to other brands.

If you're more worried about how the laptop looks rather than its specs, then waste money on a Macbook or something.
