Live professional gaming will be broadcast on the BBC after the corporation signed a deal with Britain's biggest esports organisation Gfinity to air its Elite series. Four hours of coverage will be broadcast live each weekend over the next six weeks.

The first broadcast will take place tonight (28 July) at 9pm on online channel BBC Three, and will feature Street Fighter 5 action from the Gfinity Esports Arena in London. Tomorrow the action will focus on Counter-Strike GO, and on Sunday it's the turn of Rocket League.

Following tonight's 9pm broadcast, weekly shows will air from 8:45pm on Fridays, 9pm on Saturdays and 5pm on Sundays.

I can't think of anything more boring than watching other people play videogames. I just don't get it at all.

Like other sports you have to be really into something like Street Fighter or Dota to get why what they're doing is impressive/difficultvand therefore fun to watch. Golf, cricket and football take skill but i find them boring as strawberry float to watch.

I agree that watching random shouting youths play stuff is a bit pointless, but can gwt behind more esports broadcasting. Its popular and more accessible than expensive and one-directional tv sports. At least street fighter and rocket league are fairly watchable regardless, csgo a bit less, compared to league/dota. I want to watch the coverage to see how they do it more than the actual content.

So long as the commentators aren't wanking themselves into a frenzy and declaring these geeks as legends or athletes, I'm ok with this.

Wasn't there a whole channel of this sort of thing... X League TV I believe? Esports on TV is huge in South Korea as I understand it but I'm not so sure it'll take off in the UK. The only time I've watched anything of this nature is the occasional video from EVO.

There's a gaming channel on sky somewhere, I found it when I was dog sitting a few weeks back - it was horrendous. I like watching speed runs and competitive gaming from time to time though so hopefully this makes it more accessible.

The Halo World Championship 2017 Finals by ESL broke digital viewership records across the board. At its height, the broadcast reached more than 135,000 concurrent viewers across Twitch, Twitter, Facebook, and Beam. In addition, more than 13 million unique viewers tuned in over the weekend to see competitive Halo played at the highest level across digital platforms. 10.3 million of these unique viewers watched the competition live on Twitter—a first time streaming destination for Halo esports.* These metrics exceeded last year’s tournament and make the Halo World Championship 2017 Finals the most watched digital broadcast in Halo esports history.

Best thing about esports is that video of the two guys each trying to catch out the other looking at them. Can't find it now, but it was amusing.

This probably doesn't mean as much as you think it does. The asterix in that paragraph you've quoted is revealed further down the article to show that they counted people who visited on seperate days as unique viewers which would boost the overall number. Also it's unclear how the figures are calculated, does someone scrolling past the stream that autoloads on twitter count as a viewer for instance?

I'm sure it still got millions of viewers but this kind of massaging of stats suggests it's not close to the numbers they're shouting about.

The point is, its popular and far more popular than it was in 2007.
