Released 20 years ago today, where does the time go?

It may be because I was looking forward to it but I've never known as much hype around an upcoming album as this.

The album ended up being a disappointment but it was never going to live up to expectation

Listening to it now there are some decent songs on there but they all go on too long and are overproduced.

The acoustic version of Setting Sun on the deluxe version is great.

Me and my brother pre-ordered this from the local Woolworths, and queued up outside for an early opening just for it.
Don't know why, there were only about 7 of us outside and they had hundreds of copies

I remember reading the five-star Q Magazine review and looking forward to it immensely. Obviously it turned out to be a complete barrel of gooseberry fool. I think they were just wary of slating it like they did What's The Story and ending up with egg on their face. Stopped buying the magazine shortly after that.

Definitely Maybe is by far the best Oasis album, by the way.

I was one of those who rushed to buy it on launch. I learned a very valuable lesson that day about not diving in feet first. I didn't hate the record per se, and it does have a few good tracks on it, but hardly a classic. They never reached their Definitely Maybe/What's The Story heights again, in my opinion.

I prefer By the Way, by the Red Hot Chili Peppers. But yes, DM is the best Oasis album.


My favourite track on Be Here Now is the often overlooked I hope, I think, I know, but yes, this was the beginning of the end for Oasis. (A few years later, The Importance of Being Idle was an excellent final kick from a dying act, a throwback to Oasis at their most sardonic, their most snarling, but it was a rare bright spot.)

Yeah, same here... after the first two great albums, this was a disappointment. I don't recall playing it more than once.

Twenty years ago, though .

I like it.

I reckon I listen to Cabron at least once a week, probably more if I'm really feeling it.

If you like Oasis then I don't think it's that bad an album. It's no classic and is nowhere near DM or WtSMG, but there are some decent tracks on it.

I remember I had not long started my first proper job (strawberry float me, I've been working for over 20 years ) and a bloke there had pre-ordered it and rushed to HMV at lunchtime to pick it up. He spent all afternoon talking about how amazing it was going to be. He was very quiet the next day.

I had the same reaction to The Second Coming. Oasis never really topped Definitely Maybe in my opinion. All that arrogance and swagger, live they were something else (particular if they got the hump and offered the crowd out for a fight).

I was really disappointed by this album and as such it was the last Oasis album I bought unless you count Masterplan. There are some good tracks on it but I reckon more than half of it is mediocre at best.

Reminds me that we had a school disco/party that we could bring our own music to, and I brought the D' You Know What I Mean? single along. Cue 2 minutes of beeping and helicopters before the teacher got bored and took it off

Overrated at the time but I would say it's probably underrated now. There are some really good tracks on Be Here Now, I'd definitely still rate it higher than Standing on the Shoulder of Giants.

It is a shame that is all a bit overblown and overproduced but given the sheer amount of drugs that everyone involved was probably on at the time it could have been a whole lot worse! Some really solid B sides from that era as well.

Agree!

I particularly like Flashbax and My Sister Lover.
