OK, the Mrs is moaning at me because our cheap arse Ikea bed is hurting her back. Quite frankly it's a lot better than the gooseberry fool I grew up sleeping on so doesn't bother me, but we're married now so I have to listen to her.

We went to Dreams and Bensons for beds to see which mattresses would be good for us and I think we've worked that out. But for a King Sized we'd be looking to drop around a grand on a bed + mattress. Are there any other places we should check out? We found a really nice mattress in Dreams but their beds seem pretty expensive for what they are, especially since they sell the headboards separately. I wasn't a fan of Bensons because the salesman was a bit of a banana split.

Can you not just get a mattress and keep your existing bed? Most of the comfort comes from the mattress, so unless it really is a nightmare bed just spend the money on the mattress and take her out for a curry. You'll still be quids in.

I found the sales people in Bensons to be really pushy, too.

Dreams was where the girlfriend and I got our new bed. It was only a double, but £600 for an extra firm mattress and bed frame. There must have been a decent King size there for less than a grand, surely?

Can't you buy an expensive IKEA mattress? I've got one, firm as you like, and it's bloody beautiful.

The mattress alone comes to £659. I'm looking to skimp on the base without getting something which is going to make loads of noise when we strawberry float and/or fall apart

Feather and Black make some good quality beds. We've had our bedknobs and broomsticks one for about 10 years and it's still in excellent nick.

We recently bought a new bed from M&S in their 30% off sale. I think it came to £300 odd. Need to get a new mattress next.

Probably order a mattress from Costco.

Benson. Bought a pocket sprung matress with a number 3 firmness rating, its great. Not too soft, not too hard for both of us.

And a last reduction headboard and their cheapest divan base which was not as wise as its beginning to creak on her side :x or should i say 8-)

Interested to hear recommendations for reasonably firm mattresses but enough bounce to shag on. Our frame is decent - get something solid wood bits and good hardware (steel corner braces etc) with just PU/cotton upholstery or whatever and you can tighten up with hand tools, replaceable slats (springs won't last). Low and it makes zero noise. Got it second hand with a Dreams mattress that was good for a few years then replaced with something that became helish after about 6 months and is still horrendously pokey and squishy.

I'd go for a strawberry float tonne of pocket springs, budget depending, with a firm top, and then you can buy a memory foam topper as and when you feel you need it / can afford it (get anti heat cover as memory foam locks in heat) . If you buy a mattress with the memory foam bit included, you're just paying a margin on that part, it may be low density rubbish and will wear out anyway.

Never spent money on a mattress before but wish I had/could.

Recently bought a wooden frame from Warren Evans, superb quality. I was worried it would creak but not a peep.Always a sale going on too so you can get a frame for pretty cheap. If the frame you like isn't in the sale, it'll be in the next one. Can't say I was a fan of their mattresses though, ended up getting a Silent Night one which is just

Hated Bensons too because of the pushy sales twats.

I had a look because I'm in the market for a mattress. I need a king size though so I'm looking at a minimum of 1K. :x

My back is so bad today gonna go for the interim option of a topper this month.

Those octaspring things look like the ideal compromise between springs and memory foam. The topper is affordable enough. Thanks for sharing.

I splashed out on an expensive IKEA mattress too. They made me buy it. Well worth it.

Think we're going to go with silent night pocket sprung 1000 (minus a ridiculous amount of memory foam) and one of those octaspring ventilated topper things, starting with the topper to sort out the totally gooseberry fool mattress in the meantime and phasing in the new mattress for ultimate combo.

Silent night do 75 quid trade in / removal /recycling with free delivery and moving in of the new mattress, and 15 year warranty. Dormeo do a 60 day return policy even if you sleep on it for the 60 days if it doesn't satisfy you as a good quality sleep. You can't return the silent night stuff but the reviews are all decent.

The combo would be medium firm with support zones to sort out spinal alignment stuff and the pocket springs means edge to edge equal distribution of support.

Thing is standard memory foam wedge can build up heat resulting in just more tossing and turning.

I would also not go for a 100% foam mattress with no springs as your knees and elbows are just going to sink into that making sex ridiculous (according to the testimonial of a friend of . Bouncing remains good and fun provided it isn't a totally strawberry floated metal trampoline mess.

Can't go wrong really, it's about bloody time to invest in the next 10 years of sleep - that's right into my middle age! I think the idea that good quality deep sleep means you're going to be happier or more successful in general is a fair one. I am so bloody tired of being constantly in dull pain with back spasming and always feeling restless, who should have to live with that.

Yeah, if it's foam it has to be breathable. It seems the new ones take that into account. Some of the best ones I tried were a combination of pocket springs + foam in a 4/5 firmness. I might try Ikea, but even their expensive ones tend to be a bit cheap.

I reckon Ikea will mark up like mad, as they specialise exactly in making the most impressive things as economically as possible. That's the entire point of ikea, the designs are good but the quality of some materials is shite. I mean most their furniture is literally made of Pvc and cardboard, so look at the deets.

The bed places can do big sales, but because the prices are artificially inflated. I'm going to go try and lie down on a pocket sprung one before the sales guy eats my soul. The technology seems to speak for itself. I think most the complaints from from these boingy metal wire that may as well be a pile of coat hangers.
