Yeah I've only ever slept on coat hanger beds, so I'm fine on whatever. The Mrs is a bit more delicate and now we're married I have to listen to her. if I want sex

Yeah, the Silent Night Pocket Sprung 1000 is graded firm. I think plus aerated memory foam to eliminate any pokes from springs would be ultimate.

I have literally been napping when I feel crap on a hungarian rug on the floor of my office. Not too long - sure that hurts, but long enough to rejuvinate and relax.

That's how bad my mattress currently is.

Have snapped now. I'm finding a way to pay for one of these Octaspring topper things within the week before I piss any more productivity down the drain and then will never be able to afford a new bed. My partner is flat out saying she doesn't feel like she's slept. That's just not OK!

I did used to have a single futon that was basically on the floor (well the top of a desk minus the legs of course) when I was a late teen but that's gone now.

I'm guessing you splurged on one of these? Any opinions on it?

A lot of money to spend for just a topper - I've found what appears to be the right mattress for us for under £200 on Amazon which is the same kinda money: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Silentnight-Po ... B0066KUMT2

Only thing that sucks is they don't take the old mattress away, and I would rather it gets recycled and buggers off.

Difficult for me to recommend the topper as I've never used one, nor pocket springs so I have no idea how it'll feel once laid out on the mattress. I'm guessing the topper has a money back guarantee if you're not 100% happy with it? My current mattress and one before were both Dormeo and I can definitely attest to their general quality: they're the best mattresses I've ever slept on.

I went from an awful old mattress which had regular springs, to a memory foam one and then to a Octaspring one. Each time I felt the difference. The biggest being between springs and mem foam, but the Octaspring one was that much more breathable/generally more comfy. Not to say regular mem foam mattresses (which would be substantiall cheaper than Octasprings) aren't breathable because many actually aren't 100% mem foam; our Dormeo mem foam mattress had a much larger "breathable cell" portion than its mem foam section. I believe most modern mem foam mattresses work like that. They don't have same bounce as regular springs but you also don't sink into them.

Thanks for the impressions man that's really helpful.

I read some godawful reviews on one site for their service, any experience with that? Thanks!

I've placed orders with them 3 times and found them to be great as far as customer services (upon taking order) and delivery goes. Thankfully I never felt the need to return anything, my guess is that may be a bit of a pain because they ask you to return stuff yourself; they don't come and pick mattresses up. :fp:

Good to know. Yeah the bad reviews are about very painful delivery (months) and circuitous return process.

Important question. The topper is is identical to the mattresses it is just 1 layer. I'm going to put it on top of a pocket sprung.

I only have 2 concerns:

1. How much would you sink into it, say for example of you just apply reasonable pressure with your hand how much resistance is there? Does it feel firm like it's pushing back, or is it just, "lol memory foam" (:shifty:)

2. Has it torn inside, misshapen, collapsed, gone lumpy etc and if it has how long did that take? Including "fun" times

Cheers man, I've never spent good money on beds before so don't want to get it wrong. :dread: and I don't know what to make of some of the more scathing reviews versus the the usual "this is soooo comfy" - I'd go into slightly more detail than that if I'd just dropped hundreds on a giant piece of foam.

The Octaspring one we've had for over a year and the one before that we had for another two+. Neither have gotten misshapen *at all*. They even have the same thickness as when they were new. The only damage I have seen is to one side of the older mattress, and that was down to my toenail getting caught in the material and pulling a thread loose.
If there's anything torn *inside* I haven't been able to feel it.
If you're someone who tosses and turns while sleeping I doubt this will stop that, but it will help you have a more enjoyable sleep. It has for me. (I get to bed between 9-11 and up between 5-7 and have never woken up feeling knackered on either of the Dormeos. That was not the case on the old spring mattress.)

Regarding the give of the mattress: you will not sink in :slol: If you press your hands in for support they ain't just gonna stay there, there's a pronounced bounce. Neither mattresses affected fun times.

I have a question for thee GG! Do you know if the topper has straps to help tie it to the mattress? You want to find that out.

I don't think it does, but most of them have some kind of anti slip backing. Because 7cm of dense foam is surprisingly heavy, if we use fitted sheets to, hopefully it will hold together. The whole thing will be deep though so may need new sheets

Thanks for your impressions!

Ah wait: the answer is some industrial Velcro strips I have. :)

:P Extra deep fitted sheets sounds like the better option.

Anyone tried those new mattresses that seem to be all the range at the moment?

The Eve/Simba/Casper/Leesa etc.

All look the same.

I know we're talking beds here but it's annoying how mattresses just get covered in sweat and bodily fluids over the years. Like how are you supposed to get rid of a mattress that is covered in an eternity of kernel?

Get it recycled or dump it. Also, use a mattress protector, you can get ones basically lined with plastic.

Also, most those stains are just melanin, protein, water and salt. If you hand wash them and use fresh sheets there's nothing in hygienic about it, it just happens. Humans excrete stuff.

Our tip has a mattress... 'pile' where you can dump them.

Decided to stick with the current bed frame for now, but bought a new mattress. I went for a Simba one as I can get a 100 night trial. If I don't like it they can have it back. It's a combination conical pocketsprung / foam and medium firm.

So, the mattress is coming. Thank strawberry float for that.

Went for Silentnight comfort 1200 pocket springs, based on loads of stuff and reviews. Medium firm, but allegedly quite firm.

Direct from them, I think there is still a "summer sale" (or a fake sale, it's not summer anyway..). It takes up to 2 weeks to delivery, but they pay (instead of charge, I'm looking at you John Lewis!) £75 to trade in our old (completely strawberry floated ) mattress for recycling, and they do the swap and the lifting to the room for you, as this gooseberry fool is heavy. Came to £395 with free delivery.

I'm excited! :toot: I have NEVER had a new, decent mattress and I've been in pain for months.
