PostRe: Below - It's happening! It's happening! Releasing in summer on XB1 and PC.
by Saint of Killers » Fri Aug 19, 2016 10:32 am

It's what should have happened with No Man's Sky. Better to delay it again than release less than half finished, with quasi-promise of supporting it down the line.

We told you BELOW would be out this summer. Our team worked hard to make that deadline a reality. But after a strong push, we’ve decided it isn’t ready.

We did a lot of soul searching. We knew we wanted to get it into your hands as soon as possible. We knew the game was there, and we’re super proud of it, but we also knew it needed more time to make sure it lives up to our studio’s standards, and the quality that you expect from our games. From the very beginning, BELOW has been our most ambitious undertaking, and we’re just not quite done excavating its depths, or polishing all of its facets.

Instead of giving you a new, loose release window, we will be going dark while we take the time that we need to complete BELOW without compromise. The next time you see a major BELOW update, that means our game has a firm release date, which we’ll share.

Making games is hard but rewarding work. Accepting, even after this long development, that the game needs more time is difficult, but it’s important that we are honest with ourselves as creators, and with you, the players.

We’re sorry we let you down with yet another delay. But in the end, we need to make certain that the hard work we’ve put into this game turns into something you’ll love, and to us that unfortunately means keeping BELOW in the oven a while longer, until it truly is ready.

Thanks for the continued support, and see you on the other side.

This game has the benefit of not being hyped to the ends of the earth, can you imagine the (increase in) death threats that Hello Games would have received if NMS was delayed further? :dread:

People are over exaggerating about No Mans Sky! Its a brilliant game, but perhaps its the price that is a little ott, but even then it is such a vast game.

Made by an obnoxious banana split who was so easily gotten to that he quit making the sequel to his highly successful game?

Gameplay starts after 9 mins, no release date announcement.

Kris of Cappy games did an hour long demo with a little commentary while he plays to explain how the game works. He says there are no story spoiler in the demo but seems like he gives a few secrets away. Nothing major though.

Holy gooseberry fool I didn't realise this had been kicking about since 2013.

It used to look really cool, but now looking at the trailer I think I'd just prefer a sequel to Hyperlight Drifter.

'Below' is going to come out this year, seriously

A conversation with creative director Kris Piotrowski.

Two years later, Below still doesn't have a concrete release date -- but creative director Kris Piotrowski says it'll probably, most likely, hit Xbox One and Steam this year. For real this time.

"I still can't say the exact date, but we are aiming for this year -- although we've said that over and over, so," Piotrowski says. "We have all the systems in place and now we're kind of going deeper and deeper through the world, and polishing and trying to just get it all packaged up."

Piotrowski says the development team is putting the final touches on Below -- polishing its intro and outro sections, and fine-tuning details across the entire game. Though Capy has a track record of promising a launch and later backing off, this time around it feels different to Piotrowski. After five years of public development, he says Capy is truly, finally, almost done with Below.

The extra years may have served Below well. Aside from allowing Capy to create the fully realized experience it envisioned from the start, the extra few years in development allowed for the Xbox One X to appear on the market. Today, Below runs in 4K at 60fps on the Xbox One X.

"It's one of the few benefits of spending so long, a new television resolution has appeared in our development," Piotrowski says.

Capy showed off Below in 4K for the first time ever at GDC, and the results were remarkable. The upgrade was most noticeable as the main character traversed a wide open field, where each blade of grass waved, crisp and responsive to every digital footfall or gust of wind.

Regardless of any past promises about release dates or development timelines, Below has clearly benefitted from extra time in the oven -- and it's not even out yet. Still.

Good article on Eurogamer.

Digging into the detail, Vella says Capy has done four full iterations, "almost from scratch", on the procedural generation system and how it builds the single screen levels of the depths of Below. Each iteration worked, Vella says, but there was something about each that didn't. Either it didn't feel like it was creating enough "gameplay moments", or it felt "too grid-based" and as a result "looked kind of janky", which was a problem because Capy wanted Below to feel like it was set in natural spaces.

Am I right in think this is no longer/not an Xbox exclusive? Did they mention a Switch version coming at some point?

Looks like it would be a nightmare to play on the Switch in handheld mode

Ahh I see, I think it was this article I was thinking of

https://www.godisageek.com/2018/04/interview-with-kris-pitriowski-director-of-below/

At least it seems it’s not fully console exclusive on Xbox so it may eventually come to other platforms in the future

Not sure I can see enough detail for emersion with everything being so tiny - is that a problem for games like this and would it be compounded on switch?
