Berlin's a great city, you can't really go too far wrong. Most of the pubs are welcoming and well priced. Ideal for a short lads' summer trip.*

The Brandenburg Gate is worth seeing - we were lucky enough to be there at the time Germany were playing the Netherlands, so there was a big screen up and thousands of expectant German fans. Also the Berlin Wall, but you probably knew about that anyway. Plenty of history to be seen as well as some funky modern art/vandalism.

There's a tower in the centre from which you can get great views of the city, and again that's not too pricey, so I'd recommend that. Can't remember the name for the life of me though.

The Olympic Stadium is a strange one, the team hasn't exactly been incredibly successful so there's not hordes of trophies like with other stadium tours, but it's the same ground that was built for the Nazis' Olympics so it's a very interesting combination of their desire to create a legacy, and the modern-day use of that legacy (obviously all the NSDAP stuff is at a minimum, but they still use the ground - they are Germany after all, anything else would be very inefficient!).

Oh, and make sure you get yourself some Currywurst. There are stands all throughout the city centre serving it, and you generally get it in a little box, with optional sides of fries, potato salad, and a big bottle of water beer! (which you can drink much like someone would slurp down a coke bought from a shop on the streets of the UK, they're quite happy for you wander about with a bottle so long as you're not a massive twat). And again, the pricing is very reasonable indeed. A quick google provides this list this top ten which might be of use - when we went, our hostel was about 15 mins walk away from the supposed "best Currywurst stall in Berlin!" I can't recall its name or if it was one of these on the list, I'd wager it probably was, but it was worth the walk - and all for only a few quid, large beer included.

*The trip will be the short part, I am not implying that you are somehow bereft of height

EDITED for beer. Mmm, beer.

Thanks guys - really want a few short trips throughout the year with friends.

Where should we stay to reach most of the places and is public transport any good? I found Amsterdam to be pretty damn good when we went last October!

Think I might be doing this with mates in May as well, heard it has a sick as strawberry float nightlife. If you can get into the clubs in the first place.

I'm kinda curious after reading Dan's post as to why anyone would be fussed if you carried about a big bottle of water with you :slol:

We were hoping for May this year but flights for the next few months are ludicrous.

I dunno, just had a look now on Skyscanner - as long as you're flexible with dates can be done from London for £48 for a Thursday to Monday trip. £36 to get down and back to London from Edinburgh in the same timeframe, £84 overall ain't bad!

Obviously you've never read up on the Nazi Water-Carrier craze of 1937. Get educated.

I'm limited due to work and prices from Scotland mostly seem to be £120+ each return, or slightly less with changeovers which I'm not mad keen on due to time restraints. I'd prefer Glasgow as we don't drive at the moment and it's just more expense and hassle.

Also GTF am I paying that much for an easyjet/Ryanair offering for a fairly short flight. I'll be cycling through Germany in September anyway.

Went last summer (when the World Cup final was on :datass: ) and that was a real problem, loads of places just say no without a reason and then sometimes only one or two of the group (of 6) would get in. And we were quite sensible with it, such as avoiding all 6 trying to get in together, etc, not being too english/drunk

Slightly ashamed to admit I may have just Googled that cora. :slol:

Yeah from Scotland I've got the same problem. Just over 80 quid really isn't bad for a trip out there though, when it's a short flight it makes strawberry float all difference who you fly with anyway.

Yeah I've heard that a lot.

We had the same problem in Amsterdam, where clubs would only let the lasses who we were travelling with in, or demand a 1:1 ratio of chicks to guys. :?

If you do go, make sure you plan clubs etc in advance. I've posted in the travel topic previously about the experience I had there. Here was my post:

Berlin's door policy is ridiculous. No one planned for it and we got refused from a fair few places. We really didn't account for the impact of being a group of inebriated British lads, which was probably naive on our part. Although even when we'd recruited some randoms and had a mix of girls tagging along we couldn't all get in, despite trying to go up in smaller groups.

I remember trying one place that had been recommended to us that was a small door on a random place near no other bars. We setup round the corner and divided ourselves into smaller groups. I went up with a couple of American girls we’d met and was let in.

I remember trying one place that had been recommended to us that had a really small entrance and was hidden away on a random street near no other bars/cubs. We setup round the corner and divided ourselves into smaller groups. I went up first with a couple of American girls we’d met and was let in.

e then walked down an endless number of dark, damp corridors making me think we’d gone into some kind of dodgy club. Finally we reached a random closed door, opened it up and it was like a scene from a movie. A huge open bar, a golden chandelier hanging in the middle, mirrors all the way round, a cool band playing in the corner and full of people having a good time.

Sit down with the girls, all agree that this place looks amazing, start to plan a drinks round and……phone rings…..”Hi Tom, yeah, none of us have got in so we’re going to go somewhere else, meet you outside”. I nearly stayed anyway…. I probably should have.

That club sounds amazing! That's what we had in Holland, in the end after much splitting of our group and many attempts a few of us got into one semi-decent place.

Got a call straight after saying the rest of them hadn't been accepted - thought strawberry float heading back out though, just left the rest of them to find a bar/ return to the hostel.

When i went a couple of years ago we just walked everywhere and the hotel we stayed at was right near checkpoint charlie , because of that it was really central and easy to go to all the main areas, attractions, restaurants and pubs. This was the one http://www.hotel-angleterre.de/ and it was brilliant, very friendly staff, the breakfast was good, rooms great and there was also a little shop across the road that did some really nice pastries.
