Best anti-virus software/setup these days?

Is it still AVG?

I want something that is strong against malware.

Money is no object but I'd prefer a free one.

Any advice gratefully received.

Kind regards,

Mockmaster

Is that all you use?

I had an issue with AVG when it updated. Kept freezing me at windows start up. Deleted it and just had Windows Essentials. It kept bugging me to get another so I got Avast.

Ok I'll look into it.

What about Bitdefender?

Just use Microsoft Security Essentials here too. Best virus software out there as it doesn't slow down your computer whatsoever.

It's all I used when I had a Windows laptop. I've got a Mac now so don't use anything.

Kaspersky is supposed to be the 'best' in terms of the protection it offers, I think.

But unless you're being targeted by the NSA I think Microsoft Security Essentials will be fine.

Thanks Karl. I will take a look at the suite that Kaspersky offers. If I am happy with the features of its package I may opt for doubling down, though I am not keen on a package that compromises my system's performance and after some brief research it appears that the MSE package does well on that front, at least.

MSE and a bit of common sense is all you need.

yeah MSE if you have Windows 7 or earlier, if you have Windows 8 or up it is built in.

I use Avast and find it good, but you can't go wrong with MSE as long as you are a sensible user.

However, MSE isn't great at identifying Day 0 threats, so if your toolbar loving Granny asks, Kaspersky or Avast it is.

I'm using Avast free and it seems to do the job well.

MSE and Spybot Search and Destroy, with occasional use of Malwarebytes for trickier to kill stuff.

Firewall: Windows 8 firewall
Antivirus: Avast
Antispyware: Spybot - Search & Destroy
Porn Internet history/crap deleting: CCleaner

I've used AVG in the past but I prefer Avast. Can't really remember why but I think it's less of a system hogger (?), amongst other things.

I remember the old days of early Broadband and USB modems, I had the good old AVG + Zonealarm combo.

These days though, MSE is really all you need.

Pretty much the best thing about Windows 8. MSE and common sense are all you really need.
