Yup, Spielberg would be my shout for 'best director' too. If you mean who's next film would I most like to see, I guess probably Villeneuve.

The only sane answer is Spielberg.

The lack of Paul Greengrass and Hayao Miyazaki here is unacceptable.

No John McTiernan? I’m legitimately appalled at you Preezy.

Spielberg, because nobody else on that list made Jaws.

Spielberg's more recent output has been pretty hit and miss though, for every Catch Me If You Can, there's also a Crystal Skull.

Also, War of the Worlds should have been at least ten times better than it actually was.

Lot of future sex offenders in that list

Fake edit: Current ones too

I don't think there is any one great director, but as it's a poll I went for Spielberg because many of his films do truly stand the test of time.

Is it still cool to hate on Nolan? I thought that phase had passed.

I think in the far future Wes Anderson will become the most celebrated.

Is it still cool to call people who legitimately think Nolan is overrated "haters"? I thought that phase had passed. :P

I like Nolan but he's got a long way to go before he can touch some of the other names on that list.

I've really enjoyed all of the Nolan films I've seen. Only problem I have is TDK being stupidly overrated.

Who’s hating on Chris Nolan?

It seems a bit weird to single him out when he's done as many good films as most on that list.

I'd probably go for Spielberg because of his innovation and quality among a range of genres. Ridley Scott probably has more of my personal favourites but the varying quality of his repertoire removes him from the list.

For me, out of all of those, a new Fincher film excites me more than the others.

In terms of back catalogue, Spielberg and Scorcese are way ahead.

My personal favourite is Edgar Wright (Cornetto trilogy, Scott Pilgrim, Baby Driver), but I voted Tarantino since the former isn't on the poll. Not that I have liked everything he's done - Kill Bill seemed pretty meh to me - but I dig his style and approach to films and have seen and enjoyed most of them. Favourite one would be Inglourious Basterds.

Would have given Gareth Evans a vote but he's not there so Villeneuve gets it.
