Best Indie / Little / Cheap Steam Games.

I am new to Steam! (add me if you like - dancrobbo)

What are some of the best games I should be hunting down?

I have Super Meat Boy, Portals 1 & 2, and Civ IV (thanks SD64  )

I'm aware of the big releases, megagames like GTAV and Fallout IV and so on. I'm not looking for big games to play - ideally I'm looking for some small, great indie titles to dip into, games that I might have missed reading about first time around.

Suggestions welcome!

You should get Civ V: BNW to replace Civ IV for starters! :P

I will start you off by suggesting Lovely Planet, a highscore chasing speedrun FPS/platformer with cutesy, almost Katamari-like, stylings.

I'd recommend Orcs Must Die, the Trine series and Mark of the Ninja. I also echo the praise for Brave New World and Freedom Planet from OrangeRakoon.

Have a look at sites like Humble Bundle, Indie Gala and BundleStars for great prices on games. There should be an Autumn sale on Steam next week so that would also be a good place to pick up what you really want to play now. After that, wait for the Winter sale where Steam, GOG, Green Man Gaming and others will annihilate your wallet with, potentially, bigger discounts.

The Hotline Miami bundle is on sale this weekend: http://store.steampowered.com/sub/56930/

Undertale is this year's indie darling that everyone is losing their gooseberry fool over: http://store.steampowered.com/app/391540/

The Binding of Isaac is something you can lose months of your life to: http://store.steampowered.com/bundle/139/

To The Moon is a story-based adventure that will break your heart: http://store.steampowered.com/app/206440/

Papers, Please is unlike any other game you've ever played and tense as strawberry float: http://store.steampowered.com/app/239030/

Ori and the Blind Forest is a gorgeous, wonderful Metroidvania game: http://store.steampowered.com/app/261570/

The Swapper is a brilliant puzzler with a great story: http://store.steampowered.com/app/231160/

VVVVVV is one of the best platformers ever: http://store.steampowered.com/app/70300/

Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons is a touching puzzle game with a unique core mechanic: http://store.steampowered.com/app/225080/

The Fall is an adventure game with some seriously amazing atmosphere: http://store.steampowered.com/app/290770/

I could keep going, but that's plenty to get you started. The Talos Principle is ultimately the game I'd recommend most of all, but it's like £29.99 right now, so it probably doesn't qualify.

The best game on Steam is Spelunky.

I'm sure someone will be along to disagree but all you need to know is that person probably puts salted peanuts in their bird feeder.

Second both of these.

If you're interested in tower defence games, I can heartily recommend Defense Grid: The Awakening and Plants vs Zombies as the two standouts from the genre. (Orcs Must Die technically falls under that umbrella too mind) DLC Quest is a fun but fairly short satire of DLC in general. Gunpoint is a fantastic stealth puzzle game. The Stanley Parable is quite unlike anything else I've ever played in the best way.

There's rumours going round of a steam sale incoming from the 25th this month, before the big Winter sale just before Christmas, so if something you want isn't on sale yet, it might be worth holding fire for now. Isthereanydeal.com is pretty good for checking a multitude of websites quickly and might be helpful.

Broforce is brilliant fun singleplayer and also in multiplayer. It's kind of like a probotector/contra game in a retro graphic style and you use multiple action hero types and blow up and shoot stereotypical 80's , 90's bad guys . Gangbeasts is also very good and will provide some of the most hilarious action in a local multiplayer ever.

Just thought I'd say, I'm not sure I'd recommend buying any of these games at their normal selling price.

Keep your eye on the likes of...

https://www.humblebundle.com/
https://www.bundlestars.com/en/

and even 'normal' online sellers like...

http://www.greenmangaming.com/
http://www.cdkeys.com/

Never pay 'full' price for any PC game.

Going to chime in and recommended Downwell. http://store.steampowered.com/app/360740/

Fast paced game of falling, with style. Harkens back to those tough games of the past in a similar way to Spelunky, without feeling unfair like a lot of other games tend to. At £2 it's the kind of game anyone with a PC of any kind ought to get.

EDIT - And iPhone. Forgot about that, but that must be even tougher to play...

I'm playing a quirky RPG called Lisa at the moment. Really enjoying it, worth a look. Also had fun playing Mount Your Friends in multiplayer recently.

Brothers - A Tale of Two Sons

Quite short, but very memorable. This has a very interesting gameplay hook in that you control two characters at the same time. The game is designed so well that this isn't as clunky or annoying as it sounds. It has a very sweet story that deserves to be experienced. I've seen it be continually praised on here, and I agree with all that. It fell under the radar of most.

Stealth Inc 2

You play as a clone who goes through test chambers. Test chambers essentially try to murder you. Heavy puzzle elements, great gameplay mechanics with the many items you receive. Absolutely excellent level design. Has a bit of Metroidvania thing going on with the overworld. Again, another game that deserved to be played by more people.

Shovel Knight

The bastard child of Ducktales and Megaman, with a modern touch to it. Not as tough as people say. Well put together and worthy of the acclaim it received. Absolutely superb game with a brilliant soundtrack.

Another vote for Brothers. Fantastic game.

And if you want to experience life as a mother Badger trying to protect her cubs, give Shelter a bash. Lasts a couple of hours. Perfect for Christmas.

People have already covered most of the stuff that immediately springs to mind.

Scary (genuinely unlike recent games): Amnesia Dark Descent.
Multiplayer variety: Garrys Mod (Try trouble in terrorist town).

OK, this is (I think) a dumb question, and I'm pretty sure I know the answer anyway.

If my current computer dies and I upgrade to a new and better one. When I sign into Steam on my new computer, all the games I've bought will be available for me to re-download and play again, right?
