Reviewing the list it's clear that there really is some gooseberry fool still left to deal with. I mean come on we've still got the likes of Starship Troopers, Total Recall and Gremlins in here! :fp:

Genuinely one of the most intelligent action movies, one of the greatest action movies, and Gremlins. You've saddened me. There's easily twenty films that have to go before Total Recall and Starship Troopers! :shifty:

No shifty eyes needed, you’re absolutely right.

Nah, I have heard this argument countless times and it just doesn't stand up. Anything of intelligence or significance that Troopers even tries to offer is so hackneyed or surface level that it just doesn't warrant appreciation.

It does have Denise Richards in so I'll give it some credit for that. :datass:

I think it's a really smart look at how propaganda and persuasion can be used to create and enforce a militaristic society. Create a common enemy, start a war, use a tragedy to motivate people when morale starts to dip and offer rewards(Citizenship) to those who participate in conflict.

I believe there's a scene in there that's a shot for shot remake of a Leni Riefenstahl's Triumph of the Will. I've actually seen that film and didn't realise until Banjo pointed it out to me years later - it's just a really subtle movie that is almost disguised as action trash, IMO.

I might be a little bit biased; my research interests as an academic fall into propaganda and persuasion, media relations and techniques used by the powerful to further their agendas, so it's absolutely my cup of tea. I also love explosions and loud noises.

Total Recall is just pure nostalgia on my part as well - one of a series of movies that used to pop up on ITV late at night when I stayed at my grandparents house and was allowed to watch things I shouldn't have been watching.

I fully agree with this post.
