I'm after a service to register a domain name. I've been having a look around, and had spotted GoDaddy offer this service, but their low up front prices hide a 2 year contract and a lot of additional or rising fees, and I've read that you can easily go without these. But I'm really not sure where to look. Anyone got any recommendations?

Having carried on googling since posting this, I've read that apparently a big part of their income stream comes from buying up lapsed domains and them ransoming them back to the previous owners.

Now I'm worried that having used their site to search for the domain name I want, it'll suddenly end up in their ownership and become more expensive. :dread:

This is the one I've used in the past.

Easy to setup and competitive in price.

I work at a datacentre that also sell domains and we get them from eNom. They're pretty good but have just been bought by Tucows so they now own half the market.

If you just want a domain and don't need hosting then feel free to PM me if you want a link to our website. I think our prices are good, no dodgy contract, and you get the advantage of 24hr UK support.

+1 for gandi. I have 4 domains with them, they're correctly priced, good on security, don't ram marketing at you, and don't engage in any scummy practices like buying up and raising prices on domains that get searched for. They also give you free email on your domains which is cool (although I still need to get round to actually using it properly).

Even if you don't register through them, you can use them to check domain availability without worry.

Cheers for the recommendations, all. Some decent looking choices there.
