I love the GameBoy Mario artwork, too--and I like the way it's used for games like Wario Land and the early Zelda titles. I wish it was used more frequently, these days, and I can't for the life of me remember the artist's name. He's getting on in years, but I still absolutely love his work.

I love the logo used for this game, and I think there's something eerily attractive about the design they used. Like the Seiken Densetsu 2 box posted above, it doesn't seek to give much away; it's compelling because of its ambiguity.

Image
I like this just for its sheer simplicity, and for the unusual design used for Link himself. It just feels kind of atypical for a Zelda title, and I find that kind of...interesting. The red sky and dead tree give the art a kind of absorbing vibe.

Image
One of my favourites. Like Ocarina of Time, I think Europe got the best deal for Zelda IV's box. The colourful letters juxtaposed against the black make this one look lovely, I think, and I believe the minimalist design grants a lot of importance to the game.

I loved the Sonic and Knuckles boxart. At the time it was just so different, and cool. Nowadays, it's a bit meh, but it does still stand out as a good one in the past.

Mario 64's box gets to me every time; I loved it--and actually rather liked the way the PAL boxes put a black border around the image. I thought that made for some appreciable consistency across most N64 titles, even though games like Banjo-Tooie and Pokemon: Puzzle League dropped the idea.

Not particularly old, but I think this bit of box-art is superb. Japan may not like Metroid that much, but they ended up with some stellar box designs for the series:

I loved the Japanese Gamecube boxes, there was always something special about them. I reckon it was probably that they all had the collectors edition-esque cardboard sleeves... Then we get crappy DVD boxes over here :fp:

Compare that to the boxart we got, it's immense.

 The Japanese Gamecube boxes were fantastic! The small size; the card-board sleeve; the artwork--every game felt like a high quality package. They were beautifully tailored to the small size of the disk, and they look really special when lined up on display.

I'm really thankful that I decided to import the Japanese version of Wind Waker. It's still so ethereal to hold, even after almost 8 years, and the box really is part of the reason--unmistakably. I wish the Japanese Wii boxes were designed in the same way. :(

Japanese box-art has been great from the SNES to GC. I really liked how the N64 boxes were vertical rather than horizontal, and much preferred them to the black-boarded European ones. And US N64 boxes were just crap.

This is nicely balanced to complement the Japanese GameBoy Advance box style.
