PostBest RSS reader or News reader?
by Venom » Wed Aug 19, 2015 10:30 am

Hi, I would like an efficient way to be able view the new article titles from my multiple chosen websites without having to manually go their webpage and explore them. It would also be good to categorise feeds into topics. Apparently using RSS feeds is the way to do it but despite having used the internet for many years I have never (except accidentally) used an RSS feed!

I'm using a Mac. Google led me to Feedly. I am able to add a feed within the web app but after going to a website to select its RSS feed it suggested I don't have an RSS reader. Slightly confusing. I also see that they slow down the delivery of the news unless you pay extra. How much do they delay? Do any of you have any advice or recommendations? Thank you!

I tried Flipboard on the iPad and found it to be a nice way to deliver articles into a magazine format, although it adds adverts in between pages. I gave it a go today on computer and it looks perfectly fine however I think I need just a text list of headlines. Although I will test it more this week. thanks for the tip.

If you have Twitter how about just making a Twitter list of sites?

Well, you can use Firefox and subscribe to live bookmarks. At one point I used Sage Reader extension. Then Google Reader, that died despite loads of people using it. Now I use Blinkfeed that is built into my HTC phone, but I've also tried Pulse app which was good.

The way RSS actually works is there is URL to the feed that you can add somewhere and is sometimes publicly indexed by aggregate news sites and news reader sites. It's a bit of and old thing now. An icon that says "RSS" (or Atom) or an icon that's a little wave on an orange background should lead you to the URL where the feed is at. A bit like a link to a hosted image or gif. It works the same way. This address is the "feed" that is automatically updated by the website.

If you want to use a browser, an extension is probably the best way of doing it. You add these urls to your news reader and they get "read in" every so and so.

It's a good way to get news without actually visiting sites.
