These threads are always so embarrassing.

None of those games are bad and the fact that Horizon and Destiny can even get on that list is impressive.

The list is pretty much what you'd expect, must be daunting as a software developer with an excellent idea looking at this stuff and seeing most people don't want new and interesting they just want more cod and FIFA etc

I don't think there are many surprises on that list - possibly bar Crash which has whipped up incredible sales based upon nostalgia - but the best-sellers are a perfect reflection of general gaming tastes.

Advertising and word-of-mouth are critical and your average punter is, quite naturally, gonna go with the names that they're familiar with and have seen on TV. I'd love to see, say, PES make a small dent in the mighty FIFA's armour but that ain't gonna happen.

There are, in my view, some pretty decent games on that list. CoD WW II didn't appeal to me but it gained a generally positive reception. Origins is regarded as being one of the better Assassins titles and Horizon Zero Dawn has sold well for a new franchise with, in my eyes, a terribly generic name. I wish titles focused on loot boxes hadn't done so well but most punters are oblivious and/or don't care about this.

I have no idea how Wildlands still managed to do so well. The beta was AWFUL, no redeeming qualities whatsoever. The reviews were mediocre yet still didn’t stop it performing well, so much potential but didn’t deserve selling so much.

I really enjoyed the beta - playing it for around three hours - and I picked up the game near launch. Diff'rent strokes!

Not played it yet, though :fp: .

I don't agree with this. One thing to take into account is that a large portion of those games (in fact I reckon Crash Bandicoot is the only outsider to this) are likely the highest-budget titles of the year as well, with massive marketing spends. The sales figures are great but they're the kind of titles that need mammoth sales to continue their respective series'. Smaller games are potentially still turning healthy profits as they aren't developed with the same absolutely enormous budgets and can survive with lower sales figures. Aren't Ninja Theory a pretty good example of it last year with Hellblade? If I recall correctly they were posting about how the game had broken even for them six whole months before they projected it to?

I find it similar to looking at box office returns at the cinema. We can all predict what the highest grossing films of the year will be, but there absolutely still is a market for smaller films.

The budgets for Zelda, Mario, Mario Kart, Wolfenstein 2, Resident Evil 7, Shadow of War, Mass Effect, The Evil Within 2, etc. Would be pretty high. I'd like to think that Bethesda might be joining Nintendo in not pumping out conetant sequels every and judging the success on the first few weeks of sale but putting out a few quality titles that continue to sell.

I know it’s much loved but I think crash bandicoot is utterly shite, it’s god awful. There, I said it. :slol:

The love for it is pure nostalgia. It was never a good game in the first place.

Definitely over rated, even back in the day it was an average platformer. Big selling point was the graphics.

I don't really understand the Origins love. I mean, as an AC game it was well done, but I don't particularly care for the setting. Egypt is fine and interesting as anything from a historical perspective but in terms of gameplay I much prefer having a massive cityscape to run around like in Brotherhood and Syndicate.

As much as I enjoyed it I have to agree. One of the main critism of AC3 was how sparse it was and this isn't much different.

The amount of people out there who are apparently "gamers" because they buy FIFA, and only FIFA, with the occasional CoD is disgusting.

Am I being crazy or do the numbers for everything below GTA seem kinda low?

Destiny 2 is supposed to have outsold Destiny overall but Destiny sold over 400,000 physical copies in it's first week. I know that physical sales of Destiny 2 were down a lot on Destiny but digital was supposed to have jumped massively.

^^^ Spyro rage!

I hugely enjoyed the original Spyro on PS1... a cracking game that was technically great, too!
