and probably Rock Band 3 (same as Rock Band 2)

Its like you know nothing about the games. On 3 of them you are factually wrong. The other 3 you are completely missing the point.

I tend to exaggerate when I don't have time to go into detail, but you get my point. You missed Mass Effect 2, the game of the year, which makes your point invalid.

And I'll continue to argue until Suzz gets back from his lunch break in 10 minutes.

In all seriousness though, you've got to be picky to pick fault in 2007's big hitters, some of which deserve merit for originality alone which seems to be lacking in 2010 other than a few niche titles.

Generally, I find that dismissing this year because of the number of sequels to be unfair.

Actually you make my point for me.

I really loved that game, thought it was excellent...and yet it probably wouldn't make my top 10 for the year.

I'll admit the combat became a tad repetitive, but the story, character integration, interaction, scripting and graphics were all top notch. It's actually raised the bar so hight for me I'm now waiting for Deus Ex 3 (providing it's decent) to get my next fix.

Also it doesn't help that many of us are picking games month(s) after launch when they're generally cheap. Also this year seems to stand out much more because it's fresher in our memory than the recent years' releases.

Maybe, I rarely buy new games now as I have so many other things I have to pay for. Titles like Mass Effect and Deus Ex 3 are day 1's for me, sadly alot of online games where the community dies off after 6 months also need to be bought brand new.

2010 has been an outstanding year looking back.

MAG
Mass Effect 2
Heavy Rain
White Knight Chronicles
Final Fantasy XIII(my love/hate game)
God of War III
Resonance of Fate
3D Dot Game Heroes
Yakuza 3
Bayonetta
Vanquish
Infinite Space
Dragon Quest IX
Half Minute Hero
Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker
Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep
Valkyria Chronicles II
Joe Danger
Castlevania Lords of Shadow
Metroid Other M
Super Mario Galaxy 2
Tatsunoko vs Capcom
Super Street Fighter IV
Battlefield Bad Company 2
Halo Reach
Scott Pilgrim vs The World
The Last Window
Batman The Brave and The Bold
Ys Seven
Phantasy Star Portable 2
Lara Croft and The Guardian of Light
Monster Hunter Tri
Professor Layton and the lost future
Persona Portable
Persona Portable 3
Lego Harry Potter Years 1-4

Plus through in some great PSone and Virtual Console releases and boom

I'm going to have a hell of a time choosing my GOTY this year. 2010 > the last few years. Not the best ever as some of those games disappointed me.

It's a tie between Mass Effect 2 and SMG2 for me, I can't see GT5 changing that.

I would kind of agree.

Although Heavy Rain and Enslaved are both better in some regards you mention now.

I know. That's why I'm not really of an online gamer.

I could get more online time when I get a PS3 this christmas. Currently I can't justify the gold membership fees as I'm never online for much of my gameplay time.

EDIT: And Mass Effect 3 is my definite launch day pick up, no matter what.

For me Heavy Rain got everything spot on apart from the actual gameplay, it clicked with some people but I just found it absolutely tedious. Now that's the kind of game that would ONLY work with Kinect. Enslaved just seemed to much like Heavenly Sword for my liking.

Certainly getting into the western-style RPGs now like Mass Effect, Oblivion and Deus Ex 3, these games are sadly too few and far between and Jap developers still seem to have their heads up their arses when it comes to the whole genre. Two gooseberry fool Final Fantasy games in a single year isn't quite good enough Square.

What if those sequals are much better then their originals?

With the exception of perhaps Uncharted 2 I find that no matter how good a sequel is, it will never recapture the same magic as expereince a game that first time. Give me a new IP anyday of the week, but sublimented with some great sequels.

My top 10 for the year so far...

1. Bayonetta
2. Civilization V
3. Super Mario Galaxy 2
4. Blur
5. Heavy Rain
6. Battlefield Bad Company 2
7. The Misadventures of P.B. Winterbottom
8. Splinter Cell Conviction
9. Super Meat Boy
10. Mass Effect 2

With Vanquish (if it ever turns up), Fable 3, Rock Band 3, Dance Central, Epic Mickey and others still to come I doubt ME2 will stay there.

Games I really wanted to include buy didn't have space for...Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World: The Game, Just Cause 2, Super Street Fighter IV, Red Dead Redemption...

EDIT - And I just want to point out, if you really think Bayonetta was a 'button mash' game in any way...you really didn't play the game at all.

But could you button-bash your way through Bayonetta until completion?

My younger cousin seem to do that for those kind of games, which grates me but it does get the job done. :fp:
