Why?

Because the structure didn't work for me at all...the developers decided to have a list of side missions for the main game and then suddenly make everything matter in the last few missions relating to the immediate danger to your family. I use the term 'side missions' strongly because that's what they are. The idea of creating a wealth of utterly irrelevant side missions to crescendo in to a big finale doesn't sit well with me. It's piss poor design.

The game felt utterly redundant after playing those last few missions. For the first time I could sense the peril of the John's family but everything up to that point was just a waste of time.

10 out of 10 and whatever are completely misplaced in my opinion. I don't know how the shabby missions that make up the majority of the game got passed so easily with reviewers...especially when it tried but failed to connect with the last part of the game.

I agree with Cooldawn here. I do think a lot of the big name games do not deserve the 10/10 review scores. RDR was an 8 and GTA4 a 6.

Haven't finished GTA4, but 6 seems fitting to me.

Really enjoying RDR though.

A few months ago I would have agreed with you, Bayonetta and SMG2 were heading my GOTY lists. But I keep going back to RDR and I'm still enjoying it 6 months on. The longevity there for me is nudging it closer to the top. I'm still taken aback by the craft and attention to detail. Is it perfect, hell no, but most of my favourite games could be classed as flawed masterpieces. I'm liking it more and more as I put ever more time into it. The missions to me are almost a sideshow, it's really the world I've fallen for. I couldn't care less about achievements but I'm finding myself doing them just so I can spend more time in the game world, it's a magnificent piece of work.

PS3 certainly had a positive start with God of War 3 and Heavy Rain. Apart from GT5 there's no big winter title. PS Move's line up has been a bigger let down than Kinect's!

Yeah, that's your opinion pretty much nul and void now, really.

I agree about GTA4. A massive wasted opportunity which turned into a huge great borefest.

+1

RDR prety much went down the same patch, which was a shame.

It was just enormous - far, far too big a game space. You had these repetitive emergent side missions, like people getting chased by cougars or whatever, in an attempt to perhaps spice it up, but they delayed you even more. I got to the second island and just had enough.

My interest starting fading once I'd got to the third area, but then I thought I was too close to the end to not carry on. I left it for a while before finishing it, though.

OT, I honestly couldn't decide a year. They seem to almost get better and better.
This thread reminds me that I should start the Game of the Year Awards soon :shifty:

I think I can remember more of the big releases this year. The only big game I can remember from 2009 was Resi 5 :shifty: Hence why I voted for it in the GOTY thing.

For the most part I may as well have been playing House of the Dead. I'd say it was mindless run and gun, but the control flaws made it more run then gun
