Staggered international release dates combined with a gooseberry fool memory means I can't be absolutely sure I saw these this year, but anyway...

Best

The Beasts
Killers of the Flower Moon
Tár
Leave The World Behind
Talk to Me
When Evil Lurks
Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part 1
The Holdovers
May December

Worst

Ant-man and the Wasp: Quantumania.

That was easily the worst by far. Just complete dogshit.

I think the most disappointing for me was Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.

Oppenheimer- I think this year had a decent amount of good films this year but this is the only one I've seen which I'd call great.

Honourable Mentions

The Fablemens- Perhaps a bit too self indulgent but I enjoyed it. Not one to watch on repeat though.
Renfeld
Spiderman Across the Spiderverse- 2nd half of this was really good, so high hopes for the sequel.

Most Disappointing Film of the Year

Super Mario Brothers- It was fine, a 6/10 but I was really hoping it would have been better.

Honourable Mentions

Asteroid City- I find Wes Anderson's film can be a bit hit or miss. French Dispatch is my favourite WA film, so was a bit disappointed that Asteroid City really wasn't very good.

Sisu- Managed to make a film about on old guy fighting Nazi's in the Finish Countryside dull somehow.

Ant Man 3- Was just a bit dull and I think the sign that I'm not bothered about keeping up with the Marvel films any more.

Most Surprising Film of the Year

Barbie- This was much better than I was expecting

Honourable Mentions

Women Talking- Almost forgot I'd watched this. Consider the title/premise I found it compelling.

Sleeper Hit of the Year

Renfeld- I really enjoyed this. It deserved to do better at the box office than it did.

Honourable Mentions

Cocaine Bear- The 80 minute film format lives on.

The Whale

Films I wish I saw at the cinema but haven't got around to seeing yet.

Guardians of the Galaxy 3
Dumb Money

I went too early. Saw Godzilla Minus One today. That's my favourite film of 2023. Is it the best film objectively of 2023, maybe not. But it's the one I enjoyed and kept me entertained the most.
