Seriously though, if this does have mod enabled servers, it'll be amazing for the sheer chaos they'll be. Players playing as giant waifu mechs, versus the Macho Man Randy Savage dragon from Skyrim, and someone else running around with a gun that spawns the madness from FO3 that just yell "Gary".

Having watched the Noclip doc I'm much more interested in this than I was previously.

I would definitely recommend watching it as it goes into a little more detail on what they're wanting to do with the game.

The Nukes sound much better than the glorified "kill everything" mode I first thought they were. Basically wherever you Nuke becomes a High-level zone in the map. Creatures and plant-life in that area will become much stronger and mutate further. There will also be better loot found there. Over time the radiation will fade back to a normal level. Nuking different areas will have different effects.

I'm definitely interested, especially if there are a few of us planning on getting it.

Only just catching up with the Fallout 76 thread, did you play The Division? Manhunts in the DZ were brilliant as the majority of the time everyone else on the server would band together to hunt them down.

When this game was first detailed I was kinda "What a pile of pony! It's just not Fallout :-("... but, as we near the launch, I'm now interested in the game... even though we have seen barely any actual gameplay. In my mind, I'm teling myself "it's the next Fallout!" even though I know it's not. Quite odd.

I still have zero interest in this.

I'm the first to rail against those decrying modern interpretations of old classics due to some sort of perceived retro-active destruction of the objects of their adoration, but still... Fallout 76 is not, to me, a Fallout game.

To me, Fallout was about interaction as much as it was about exploration. In many instances it was about exploration through interaction. The caveat to this is that it was curated interaction, a series of non-linear encounters that, when pieced together, created a world far larger and more interesting than the game could possibly show. This held true, to an extent, in Fallout 3 even where characters had, you know, character and managed to hint at an extended universe outside the confines of the game.

Fallout 4 was a failure in this regard. The central story had promise, the Commonwealth androids standing in for the McCarthy-era Soviet spy paranoia, but was so lacking in imagination it pretty much killed the series for me. And now we have 76, where one of the key marketing pushes is the fact that there are zero NPCs in the game, just other players.

There's also the concerning inversion of the series' trademark branding. The original Fallouts used Vault Boy and VaultTec as a parodies to put a mirror to the face of American Exceptionalism, both in the 40s and 50s and the present day. In Fallout 76 the sarcastic idolatry of these figures is complete, with both becoming not the target of the game's scorn but the centre of its personality. See also the degradation of nukes from being an unspeakable horror that haunted every inch of the gameworld to...the reward for completing the end game content. The entire point of the first game has now been entirely inverted in on itself.

I generally like Bethesda RPGs, but this one...nah.

I'll certainly take a look at 76 at some point, but with F3 & Vegas still grabbing my attention many years after their launch (helped by a healthy mod scene) I see little reason to jump straight in.

Fallout 4? It just didn't feel right. Something was definitely off with it.

I'll probably end up trying this as the missus has it pre-ordered. I don't know what to think yet, but Taf's reading of it inverting the original games' purpose doesn't fill me with confidence. Could be fun anyway though...

A thought for Taf: Maybe people in Appalachia, where this is set, are country bumpkin idiots who drink conservative Kool-Aid and vote for rich Republicans who don't act in the interests of their constituents. Maybe they're the type of people to play with nukes as if they were Nerf guns.
