Nah, ESO is still going strong and it's a follow up to Bethesda's biggest success ever (in sales).

In name alone it will be around for a while.

That's an online version of the single player game. This is full on multiplayer with presumably the awful shooting from the Fallout games. I guess that hasn't stopped Fortnite and PUBG but I can't see this one sticking around.

VATs is still there, but they've removed the time dilation. So it's probably just a straight up targeting system. Which... I have no idea how that's going to work. Again, this is literally Fallout 4 multiplayer. The engine is the same (with a few graphical updates) and the systems are the same, it's just that there's no more human NPCs and it's online only.

There's no way this isn't going to sell like hotcakes as, for the average consumer, it's just another Fallout game. It will depend on the metering close to release, but I'll bet a few will buy it completely unaware that is multiplayer only. It's long term success though...I have no idea.

I hope it's good, I like online survival and this is survival lite so it appears to appeal to me at least on the surface. They are so sketchy about what it actually is though.

It's Fallout 4 multiplayer. It's the game, Fallout 4... Multiplayer. Fallout 4, with multiple people. That's this game. Multiplayer. In Fallout 4.

EDIT:

Watch this video. It explains the finer points of this Fallout 4 Multiplayer game.

Spoiler: It's Fallout 4 multiplayer

It's not that simple, how does the building mechanic work? how can you move base anywhere? are there any NPC's? is your base persistent in the world/server do you lose your loot when killed...there's a ton of questions to answer.

Photek: they literally answered all of those questions in the conference!

Building: same as, you guessed it, Fallout 4 but you can do it anywhere. If your spot is taken when you log into a new server, it's just packed up as an inventory item and you can place it anywhere.

NPCs: I literally just said this: no. There are robots and enemies, that's it.

Property/loot: It is consistent. You lose nothing when you die

Seriously.

That's the only thing that makes me think this could be really good. When it comes to exploration and looting Fallout is as good as it gets.

I must admit, this noclip doc is selling me on it a little more. But I'm still annoyed with the philosophy behind it. To take strawberry floating NPCs out of Fallout, to remove an overarching story to rely on dynamic player interaction is...exactly the opposite of what I want from a Fallout game.

But still. As people have said, the exploration in Fallout was one of the few things F4 didn't completely dumb down.

I very much doubt I'll end up buying it. But the potential of a DayZ-esque Fallout is...interesting in a way. I just don't think it's going to work on the back of F4 systems.

EDIT: Uuuuurgh, there's going to be a deathmatch mode. And I'm really not onboard with the endgame nuke stuff that makes up the endgame.

Yeah, sorry I was a bit harsh there. Posting whilst watching the doc and it's...making me a bit sad.

I just think with Death having next to no consequences it will lose any tension when out in the wild looting. Fallout 4 had same kinda thing but at least you had the stories and side stories and characters to engage with. Taking NPC's out means it'll be just enemies and wandering about looking at terminals for tales, then some guy klls you, you reload maybe opt to 'avoid them' and carry on.

Meeting other players will be nothing more than an annoyance rather than tense.

I reckon they'll be a small percentage of players who will play it as intended: grouping up, taking on quests, getting to the endgame.

The rest will be griefers and solo players who shoot on sight. They've mentioned a wanted level, but who gives a gooseberry fool? Every game like this I've ever played has had this problem.

Your'e not wrong, pretty much everyone in Sea of Thieves even attack, and in that it can be pointless as the amount of ammo and time it takes to take down even a sloop isn't worth the reward, unless it's STUFFED full of chests and skulls, if it has anything at all. I hope the AI galleons coming will mean players team up more.

I do like the tension though, I liked in Ark when I spotted other players I wouldn't know if they are friendly or not, a lot were at the start but now everyone kills everyone and Ark is so unbalanced that even after 30-40hrs play I can be confronted by a guy riding a T-rex with an AK47 while I have a bow and arrow on a raptor. Ark can still be good if you find a decent server though.

I assume mods will be right out the window for this, as well.

I wouldn't be surprised if Bethesda decided to give paid mods another go with this. The excuse being "Oh well we have to curate every mod since it's online so we have to charge for them"
