It's a ridiculous headline, plainly intentionally made to spark ridicule, but the point is solid. It's a lazy endgame mechanic that is not only inappropriate in a general context but also internally: it draws a line under what Fallout games used to be and what they have become.

I'm not aware of the original Fallout games but I'm guessing they show more of the horrors of nuclear war where as this is about mercing noobs with mini nukes?

I think it's okay to lament the disappearance of Fallout games in that style, but I also think it's okay for a spin-off of a popular IP to do its own thing, knowing it won't be to every existing fan's taste.

To give an example, Alien and Aliens are completely different films despite sharing the same IP, yet both are great in their own way and I love them both.

I've not played the original Fallout games* but I'm a huge fan of 3, New Vegas and 4. I think it's clear thst 76 is not a sequel to those titles; it's a different style of game in the same universe. I would probably prefer something similar but I'm still keen to try out and explore 76.

* But I'm about to read about them in the current issue of Retro Gamer magazine!

I'm pretty much only interested in this for the building mode with the actual game being a bonus.

If they've improved the settlement system it could be pretty great and they could have systems where you can create them and have people popping in to buy and sell stuff because they like your particular settlement. You could collaborate with others to make vast areas and I can see some impressive towns being created.
The idea that having buildings destroyed by others is easily replaceable at almost no cost is a great way to avoid the griefing problem.

Unfortunately no NPCs means there will be no settlers/vendors, so that's a big let-down from 4. But on the other hand, there is plenty more to build with and you can build anywhere.

That's...pretty bad. I don't think I've ever seen a games company basically admit their upcoming, full-price release is in fact an early access game.

Yep. They either need to drop the price to reflect the games unfinished state or put it on hold.

They won't do either though, because "shareholders".

I'm not sure... perhaps I'm activating "Bethesda Defence Force" because I'm quite keen on the game, but I read that message as being "we're doing something different and the experience will evolve over time".

The game remains my most hotly-anticipated title for this end-year period! I am a little apprehensive, though :shifty: .

Games like this do evolve over time, but given Bethesda's track record for releasing broken games this just sounds like another bug ridden mess and they're, rather cheekily , asking early adopters to help them sort out said mess. If Bethesda had any decency they'd offer all registered users who purchased the game during launch week some kind of digital voucher to use with any future add-ons as a thank you for "play testing" their broken game.

I kinda like the idea of stepping out into an unexplored frontier and immersing myself in a rich, open-world apocalyptic experience. Or, to put it another way, identifying bugs :datass: .

I haven't placed my pre-order yet and I'll be looking closely at how Xbox players get on with the beta test.

My point being, with so much negativity directed toward the the AAA side of the industry of recent, (and rightly so in most instances), a bit of good will from such a well established publisher/developer could be a good thing.

I'd...question that interpretation, primarily because I genuinely don't think they're doing anything new here. I mean, this is new for Bethesda sure, but that's not an excuse to wave your hands and dismiss bugs and problems as "part of the game development process." If something is new to your studio, you hire people with experience and/or learn enough yourselves to make it work. Total War developer Creative Assembly decided to make an FPS horror game and released one of the most polished games ever with Alien Isolation. They didn't announce to the community that gooseberry fool might go sideways. RTS/ARPG developer Blizzard made an MMO and changed the gaming world with zero experience and didn't make a proclamation beforehand to limit expectations.

To me this sounds like damage control, an anticipatory move meant to head off criticism of server-issues and the copious amount of bugs.

Yeah, I kinda agree, guys. I'm as vocal as anyone when it comes to releasing incomplete games and shovelling in additional payments.

My view is perhaps clouded because I like Fallout games and I like much of Bethesda's output. On that basis I'm extending a fair amount of leeway to Fallout 76... there are aspects I'm concerned about but, for me, the potential remains exciting.

Basically, it needs longer in development but management don't want to delay it. It doesn't seem the smartest move to me because they're going to generate a lot of negative press if it's a mess. By the time they've got it to a decent state, the reputation of the game will already be significantly tarnished. No Man Sky is a good example, which released to a lot of criticism but 2 years later, following updates and patches is supposedly a much better experience. I can't help but feel it would have sold better if it had released to the praise it's getting now.
