Fallout 76 is the score it wishes it had on metacritic

I think it's in the interest of the Fallout franchise that 76 doesn't have any long term success so as to discourage Bethesda from churning out more at the expense of the series proper. If online numbers dwindle within 12 months then hopefully Bethesda will see it as a failed experiment and move on. If not, then it could be the end of any future full fat, single player Fallout games.

Just looked up a schedule for the Beta, and it isn't supposed to go live again until Saturday and Sunday, when it'll be up for 2 hours each.

The missus wanted to play it so badly, but it was 48GB and took all evening after work yesterday to download, finishing around 2am. She's out all weekend.

What a pathetic excuse for a beta.

Fallout 76 desperately needs private servers

For Fallout 76, the issues are slightly different. The world feels extremely well-detailed. It’s a place with characters, with nuance, and with mysteries to explore. It’s just that it’s also full of other people and online features that I find distracting. Simply casting that all aside in favor of private servers, even ones that rely on peer-to-peer connections, is likely to be a tall order for those working hard to build the game.

Here’s hoping that Bethesda makes the decision to prioritize private servers, despite the challenges that will create. I, like many who have enjoyed the Fallout series over the years, value the solitude that single-player games provide. So far, Fallout 76 just isn’t doing it for me.

Replace 76 with Shelter (or 4 depending on how you are feeling)

Well a solid mod community is keeping earlier FO games alive and kicking, so I'm content with that.

I don't think anyone was expecting any different, they only announced it to stop people asking

Maybe by then they'll have upgraded their strawberry floating engine. Probably not though.

Starfield is due out before then anyway, and is something I'm far more excited for.

It's going to be a mid-next gen game, mark my words. 2023 or later.

Fallout: New California mod review – set-pieces and brilliant voice acting make this mod feel like DLC

So, here’s the rub: New California is not as inventive or funny as the best of New Vegas DLCs, but it is consistently better written and more faithful to the soul of the franchise than any of the Bethesda content, with the possible exception of that one sidequest with the Republic of Dave.

Was really excited about when they revealed it but honestly my interest in the game has gone down a lot, now way am I paying £50 for essentially early access to a highly likely broken game. I;ll be waiting till the game drops in price before I'd considering getting it.

I wouldn't be surprised to see this on Gamepass eventually so I'll just wait until then.

I think that could happen quite quickly as this game really hasn't had the reception that the developers wanted. I was looking forward to it but it's now been relegated to my Boomerang list and I highly doubt I'll buy it and I'm someone who owns multiple copies of Skyrim and Fallout 4 :shifty: .

I suspect it'll start hitting services like Gamepass/PS Plus once a paid expansion comes out. Assuming one actually does.

Regarding this, it took me strawberry floating forever to set it up (and even then some of the recommended mods came back as being incompatible) and started it up. The mod starts with an extended set-piece where it intentionally cripples you (ie forces you to walk at half speed) while setting you a task that requires you travel all around the extensive opening level. Then there's some explosions, then it crashed.

So, it's more New Vegas basically.

FO3 and FO4 both have better maps than New Vegas, because the Mojave desert is all a bit too... deserty. But everything else in NV is so much better done that the map isn't really an issue.

FO3 remains my favourite map to traverse, all else the same, as I really loved having to move through the subway to get into Washington. It was all a bit Metro 2033 before Metro 2033.

Fallout 3 obviously has the nostalgia going for it, what with being the first game in the series most of us played. I thought NV was the much more interesting title though. It's just a shame it was so buggy on launch.

The map probably wasn't as good though, largely because Nee Vegas itself was a functioning place, so you didn't get that shell of a city to explore like you did with D.C. However, D.C. itself was a bloody pain to explore at times, due to having to get to certain places through the subway. You couldn't just get to everywhere above ground.

I have had 4 download since launch having been peer pressured into buying it. Only played the first two hours though. Might go back to it soon.

Fallout 3 will forever be in my top 15 or so games simply because it came to me at I time I desperately needed the escapism it provided. Compared to the older Fallout games it was a narrative and thematic mess with a main plot that read like bad fan-fiction and some deeply questionable lore decisions but moment to moment it was a joy to play.

New Vegas came too soon for me after 3 and changed too many aspects whilst looking exactly the same. F3's map was open from the start; there are multitudes of invisible walls in NV and a route you're very much expected to follow before it opens up. F3's decisions meant you almost always saw all the content the game had to offer; NV relied on zero sum games where taking one path closed off another. NV is a much, much better game but I was expecting more F3 and it took me a good few restarts to 'get' it.

F4 was an action RPG with minecraft elements. Choice is non-existent, the plot is nonsense and, although there are several grand set pieces, it's a far weaker experience than any of the other games.

I think it's a great strength of NV that there is an intended route that the player is prompted towards, but it can be completely ignored. I'm not sure what you mean by invisible walls? You can run straight through to New Vegas through Deathclaw territory from the start if you want. Goodsprings, which acts as the tutorial, can be left immediately if the player prefers.
