I guess it's a clash of perspectives, Taf. I imagine that, in your eyes, you're merely identifying "bad" aspects that have been called out whilst, to me, it feels a wee bit like you're fixated on the negatives. The truth is probably somewhere in the middle... but, hey, I know that this kind of thinking never goes down well.

I understand that, in general, everything is subjective. But just as you see me as being needlessly negative I see you being needlessly centrist. There's really, really no harm in having strong opinions about things*. It's the basis of the entire concept of forums, for example.

*EDIT. Most things.

At least, as a "sider", you get folk stepping in to support your view... as a "centrist" I get folk queuing from both "sides" to join the kick-fest  . Ah well, that's life. Anyhow, I accept that the game does look like it'll have a few challenges at launch but I really hope that the title is popular enough for Bethesda to work hard at improving it.

Honestly, I'm hoping quite the opposite. I hope this is massively unpopular and fails. Hard.
This game needs to be a failure to show that this is not the direction to take not only the Fallout franchise but Bethesda games in general.

Yep, I agree with Laga.

The reactions I've seen are "meh" and it seems un-engaging in every way

The Beta has done nothing to build any sort of hype.

It feels odd to call me out on my post, when Photek was the one criticising Taf's negative reaction to a game that has received a... negative reaction. I was merely highlighting that it's spent the past week or getting panned. Taf's hardly been alone in that too - many others have pointed out the ludicrous bugs. Granted, it is a beta, but Bethesda's games usually end up like that past launch and beyond.

It's fair enough to say, "but what about the positive sides" and asking everyone keeps a nice, cheery veneer on things.

So, I'll ask, what have you seen from the gaming media this week that puts such a spin on things? Everything I've seen from the press has been about a glitch, a bug or how it all seems a bit of an ill-fit. Now I think Taf maybe was predisposed into disliking the game (I think he's said as much in this thread). Personally, I was actually tentatively curious about the game when it was released, and willing to be pleasantly surprised by it. But there hasnt been much focus on the game's good points anywhere this past week, so it's a bit churlish to highlight GRcade or Tag in particular as being out of step.

Of course, like I said, the game may launch in a better state. Plus games like these, like ESO, Sea of Thieves, Destiny etc. tend to be a better game a year down the line. We can't really judge that for now. When we can judge is the night, awkward game that has been getting mocked in places other than here.

Fallout 4 is Bethesda’s biggest selling game.

And what’s wrong with Wolfenstein and Dishonored?

Photek was suggesting that Taf has been posting for quite some time iin the same style... and I agreed with that call. It was getting a tad wearing; especially as Taf had clearly already made his views known, has no intention of playing the game and - for a while - was instead writing about a fan-made Fallout mod here.

At the risk of re-stating something I've already said, I have no problem with folk having differing views; nor am I saying that folk should not be able to criticise a game. As Taf said, this is a forum after all! But... if you don't like the look of a game, that's cool; let us know - that's fine... but there's probably not a need to keep posting about a game you don't like. It could be better to direct that time and effort towards something that you're excited about :-).

Edit: I've no axe to grind with anyone; it's just a difference in opinion.

At the risk of pouring petrol on this page's fire:

Also, I'm going to be completely transparent here - I hope this game crashes and burns so we never get another one. If it looked great from the start then fine, but it looks like a fallout 4 mod ffs.

What are you talking about? I've not mentioned those at all.

Or are you saying you want Wolfenstein and Doom to become empty games as a service worlds devoid of any real story/lore/characters?

Thing is, they could have made this pretty good. All they had to do was basically make Elder Scrolls Online but Fallout. Elder Scrolls Online is a pretty fun online experience that works as both single and multiplayer. It has plots, NPCs, quests, the works.

Heads up people. I will now be altering my posting style a minimum of 4 times a day. So far I've got the following lined up for you all:

- Hopelessly Optimistic Taf
- Sober Downbeat Taf
- Whistfully Playful Taf
- Alarmingly Extreme Taf

Hopefully this will diffuse my opinions enough so as to not cause offense!

I joke, but seriously. If someone had hijacked the thread with positivity, against all evidence, would this have been an issue? Although Parksey is right and I was 100% disinclined to like the game this doesn't mean me posting impressions is in any way wrong, I don't think.

Yep, that's all they had to do. I enjoy ESO because it works and when I first heard about Fallout 76 I was excited by the idea. I genuinely thought it would be much the same thing. Sadly 76 is shaping up to be nothing more than a lazy money spinner for Bugthesda.

To quote Burt Reynolds "If it looks like gooseberry fool, sounds like gooseberry fool, then it's gonna be gooseberry fool".

I watched someone streaming it and it looked ok, certainly a bit more than just a lazy cash in but probably not different enough to be a full price release.

Taf do you not think that you can occasionally be guilty of a bit of confirmation bias? You seem to decide you either love it hate something and just surround yourself with opinions that validate your opinion, Red Dead 2, The Last of Us 2 and Prey spring to mind. I understand that this is receiving a lot of negativity from the internet but seriously, what doesn't?

I do, but I don't think this is unusual. Anyone claiming they aren't a victim of confirmation bias is, well, lying to themselves to some degree.

I would argue with you sayin 'everything gets negative reviews on the internet.' I mean, in this context. Of course everything gets negative reviews on the internet. Here though I don't think it's a stretch to say F76 is receiving more negative reviews than positive and due to the developer and the franchise I think this is worth notice.

Like I mentioned above, I did indeed cherry pick a few reports in order to support my own viewpoint but I simply haven't seen any majority positive YouTube impression pieces. I mean RPS seemed to get along OK with it here

https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2018/1 ... ilderness/

and here

https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2018/1 ... e-fallout/

But that's about the most positive pieces on my radar.

I guess you're right, I just try to have a bit of an open mind when it comes to the internet's reaction, especially as it gets harder and harder to tell who's opinion is valid, who is falling in with the prescribed narrative and who is just after the hits. Then there is also three fact that games criticism seems to be more about opinion pieces and finding people who have similar tastes to yourself so there will be perfectly valid positive and negative view points but they might not be relevant to yourself.

I totally understand why people have an issue with the direction that Bethesda are going with Fallout, especially given the like warm reception to Fallout 4 but open world loot games are all the rage at the moment and while it's more than likely a financial design than an artistic one, Fallout 3 for me is the open world loot game so
I think they deserve a shot.
