OK, what the strawberry float is wrong with Alaska. Looks like they may be electing a felon to Senate (long-term Republican Senator, found guilty of corruption last month). I he does win, he'll probably have to retire immediately and there'll be a special election to replace him... any guesses as to who might be the Republican candidate? :fp:

Also, I had £10 on Obama winning 350-369 EVs at 10-3, and it looks like that's exactly what's going to happen. 8-)

Games and Stuff.

If you can read this, you're too close.

But Gordon Brown is 'our' Richard Nixon? Please god no.

I should further add, I don't mean much politically (there's a distinct gulf here), but personality is key to Presidents and Brown's (public) personality and appearance seem close to Nixon.

That's just as bad though. :( When's our election anyway, I thought it was fairly soon?

Not really. There can be five years between elections, so it could be any time between now and 3 June 2010. Right now I think it'll be as close to 3 June 2010 as possible unless the Tories seriously shoot themselves in the foot.

Shouldn't it be predetermined? Brown took over from a disgraced Blair so the election should be when Blair's term would have ended.

That's why it's 2010 and not 2013 - Blair's term would have ended then. :P

So? He took over as the leader of the Labour party, that doesn't effect elections.

The 2010 date is the same for whoever's PM - Blair/Brown/anyone from Labour. For example if Miliband took over as leader/PM now, it wouldn't change the deadline for an general election.

There's no set term for each "elected" period. (There's a minimum I think, but I'm not sure) - it can be anything up to 5 years. It's up to the government to decide when it wants the election in that 5 year period.

(They really should start teaching the UK political system in schools)

Absolutely this.

I confess that I don't know much about Obama's politics, but this is hugely exciting nonetheless.

Incredible result. Just 40 years after the civil rights movement, an Afro-American is America's next Commander-in-Chief. Unbelievable, and utterly fantastic.
