That's just the thing though, "these days", there's no predictability with this market, in the next coming years it might very well be Samsung's phones that have fallen from grace if they decide to try and make it using their own OS, Bada.

BBM is probably their biggest feature at the moment.

Nah

Tizen won't take off either, any new OS will struggle to compete with Apple, Google and Microsoft.

but is BBM enuff on its own? whatsapp does a pretty good job and for BBM to work would both users need a BB android phone? catch 22 there

I like the idea of a somewhat heavily skinned Android Blackberry. The look and feel of Blackberry software could be kept, if RIM wished. Keep the keyboard, make it a small touchscreen. Get rid of the touchpad and the ancillary answer/menu/back/hang up buttons. Consign strawberry floating Blackberry App World to the flaming depths of Hell and get Android Marketplace all up in there. Make BBM a general Android app, that must be possible somehow, surely. And RIM use proprietary parts in their phones too, right? Is there a reason for that, or could they source equal or greater parts from outside manufacturers at lower cost?

The thing that makes BBM so useful for business people though is that it's secure as it runs through RIM's servers, I doubt they would be too happy handling all the extra traffic for everyone with a Samsung phone.

In fairness any IM client runs through the servers of the people running it, but as you say BBM is much much more secure than others. But if Blackberry buckle you can guarantee someone will buy it and related patents, my bet is Microsoft will have it as their IM is a bit gooseberry fool and as this has massive business benefit they will want it in WP for sure.

Would BBM being a general old Android app inherently be cause for it to be less secure?

i fairness you could build the security in, but I don't think it would be used much as talk does the job for the general public. BBM is only used by chavs so much because the blackberry was the "in" phone to have and so people used it, but people are leaving it and moving to systems like talk which is cross platform.

BBM is used so much because it's a free alternative to texting with delivered/read notifications plus the fact that you can see when the other person is typing, and you can have group chats and stuff. The "only chavs use BBM because it's cool" stereotype is utter bullshit.

Everyone I know with an Android phone has never used Talk in their life because no one else uses it.

I tend to use IM+, if I need Instant Messenging.

So all the people at the Verge who are content to have Verge writers think for them are hating on this, but I think it's pretty funny:

There's some more BB10 news today. I'm interested to see what they can do.

I've watched it like 4 times now.

It gets better every time. The way he nervously glances to the side at one point is amazing. Not to mention the fact that the sync is ever so slightly off at the beginning.

edit: they need to give the guy on the keyboard a raise.

That is awesome. Convincing devs to stay onboard... through the medium of song.

That video is magnificent. For RIMs sake I hope the new OS is good as well.
