Rumours that they want to spin off BBM into a separate company http://www.theverge.com/2013/8/27/46638 ... ims-report

Pretty much strawberry floated, then.

BlackBerry is preparing a round of deep staff cuts by the end of 2013 and could lay off as many as 40% of its employees, it has been claimed. The layoffs will happen across the board and likely occur in waves, according to the Wall Street Journal.

BlackBerry, which once dominated the corporate smartphone arena, has struggled in recent years to stop rapid market share losses to rivals like Apple and Samsung.

In January, BlackBerry unveiled new phones running a revamped operating system called BlackBerry 10 designed to better compete, but its market share continues to lag.

A spokesman for parent company Research In Motion said: "We will not comment on rumours and speculation.

"As previously stated, we are in the second phase of our transformation plan.

"Organisational moves will continue to occur to ensure we have the right people in the right roles to drive new opportunities in mobile computing."

Last month BlackBerry confirmed it will consider entering joint ventures, partnerships or even a full sale of the company.

So blackberry have a new phone...

Looks pretty good, but I wouldn't want to pay $699 which is how much they are charging for the unlocked version here.

hmmmm how many videos play 4:3? hmmmm

Its shape doesn't afford the ability to make calls easy, it will be like trying to make a phone call with a block of cheese.

well done Blackberry.

What on earth are they thinking putting a physical keyboard on a smartphone in this day and age? Do they WANT to go out of business?

Typical Blackberry! Always being so edgy!

It will be the ruin of them.

I know I'd much rather have a keypad than an on screen keyboard.

Yeah that's why they did it.

It wasn't a rhetorical question, I genuinely think that is their intention.

And the square screen?

Honestly? I'd be fine with that. The only reason I could ever see me wanting to use my phone is to text, call and every so often browse the web. There's no way I'd pay what they're charging for and if I was to get a new smart phone I'd go with a galaxy despite the lack of buttons due to the software supported, but I can see the appeal of this.

Had a Blackberry 9900 and it was a lovely device, the keyboard is excellent and it felt so good to type on compared to a touch screen. The screen size didn't bother me at all as I don't really use phones for watching videos, playing games etc. Aside from the obvious I mostly use it for Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat etc.

I'd much rather have physical buttons then an on screen key board, I really don't understand why some people can't grasp this concept. The square screen is a bit weird but they are clearly going for a business demographic so I guess it makes viewing things like charts etc easier.

BB10 devices have a built in emulator to run Android apps, I haven't used it myself but I've heard it's fairly fast and smooth and since you are running it in a virtual sandbox, it's supposedly more secure then running it on a native android device.

I would consider this for my next phone but I would wait a bit for the price to drop. The main downside for me is that space bar squished into the keyboard like that, seems a bit awkward.

I like physical keyboards too, though I'm not sure about the square screen!

I would rather they just bit the bullet and went full Android, although I can see why they wouldn't. It be like sawing the branch you're standing on.

catch 22 etc...

That would only shoot themselves in the foot, they are well known for security, and Android can't be secure as long as Google has it's back door kill switch in there. Furthermore it would alienate their customers, they need to know their market and I think chasing after the average consumer is not the way to go since most people are idiots anyways and just want something shiny.

They should stick to making good quality phones for a specific market and hopefully other people outside the market will then buy their phones, which is what happened in the past. When they try to broaden their scope and make something for the main stream consumer it just ends badly because it alienates the people who always bought their products.

I don't think anyone has the illusion that they will somehow topple Android and Apple with this new phone but they can certainly still be a viable company if their products target the right people.
