Bombed bad in America.

Not entirely surprising.

Outside of internet circles, the original isn't some widely beloved master piece the public have been crying out for a sequel for.

Saw this on sat, impressions (included spoilers)

+ Music is beautiful, great mix of subtle ambience an stunning drum beats

+ Cinematography and artistic direction were brilliant, perfectly emulates the original while adding more colour in certain areas

+ Jared Leto's character was brilliant, really wanted to see more of him

+ Ryan Gosling won me over in this, never been a fan of his but he really redeemed himself

+ Welled up when the Rachael replicant appeared near the end, how did they do that?

+ K dying while Tears in the Rain plays in the background

+ Not once did it feel like it was dragging, as with the original the quiet reflection scenes were some of my favourites

- Antagonists could've been more interesting, especially after Rutger Hauer's performance and dialogue in the original

- City felt a little too clean in a lot of areas, the glowing holograms and white spaces didn't fit in the the grimey cyberpunk aesthetic

- Scope felt a little too big, to me Blade Runner was always about a few characters with a plot that didn't really have much of an impact on the world, at times 2047 felt like the consequences of their actions could spark a revolution

That's because the majority of people are stupid and are happy as long as they have their Marvel Cinematic Universe crap to pacify them.

Agree with most of this except
- Leto was, I thought, awful. In the hands of a better actor some of those lines might have worked, or even seemed philosophically sound, but he made them sound like first year uni student claptrap. I was glad he only had two scenes. I actually think the character of Wallace would have been a much more intimidating presence had he not appeared at all.

- I agree with the city feeling a bit too clean but think this had more to do with the cinematography than anything. All of Villeneuve's films have a very sterile, clean look to them. Also, this is 30 years in the future... there's less people on earth than ever.

I never thought about the scope but yeah you're absolutely right. The original was just a cop hunting down some bad dudes (although they did kill the most powerful man on earth). 2049 was about the start of a revolution. At the midpoint I was very much 'I really hope this is it and they don't make a sequel' but the last third has me fully on-board for a third film. The disappointing box office night mean that's kiboshed already though.

Also, did anyone notice the sound effect used for Wallace's 'eyes' were the same as the Scanner drones from Half Life 2?

He was bland for sure, but it didn't help that Wallace was a one-note character. He's a "creepy guy with a god complex"
and that was really it. A better actor would have made better use of what little material they had (apparently they wanted Bowie,
and HOLY gooseberry fool do I wish we could have got that) but I don't think Leto is entirely to blame.

Also, I thought the film was brilliant. Had problems, but you just don't see big budget filmmaking like that much any more.

He's basically this movie's equivalent of Dr Tyrell and does a very good job at it. Didn't need any more depth.

Other characters at least had shades to them, he was clear cut and almost pantomime by comparison. He's only in two scenes though, and they're both still good scenes so it doesn't really matter too much

I feel like I should be.

This has god me even more pumped for Cyberpunk 2077 which, hopefully, takes a lot of inspiration from Blade Runner.

I'd like to see another video game based on the world too, something like LA Noire complete with the interrogation stages.

I don't want to be 'that guy' but Blade Runner is Noir, not cyberpunk. The former set the visual design for the burgeoning genre of the latter but thematically they're quite diverse from each other.

I'd settle for a remastered version of the 1997 Westwood game.

Is it not just noir and cyberpunk? I'm not a fancy-pants film guy but it seems to me like both labels fit.

Yeah but it also claims Snowpiercer is in the genre so maybe don't trust it

Thematics and visuals are tres different. Blade Runner is noir in its themes and execution but decidedly cyberpunk in its visuals (so yes I suppose it is both in a sense BUT only in retrospect). Now, BR actually came out before the codifying text of cyberpunk, William Gibson's Neuromancer. Gibson went to see BR while he was writing it and was terrified he'd be accused of copying the film's aesthetics. Because Gibson's novel and Scott's film were coincidentally so similar in their vision of the future, if not their themes, BR unintentionally set the visual tropes for the entire genre. The film itself however remains decidedly future-set noir, Chandler via Dick.

Visually, I'm sure Cyberpunk 2077 will take cues from BR (which makes me seem pedantic I know) but I hope that thematically it looks elsewhere, to the original pen and paper RPG or Gibson's work
Fin.

I thought Leto was great and I thought his character was excellent. I'm glad he was only in two scenes though, it was very much a less is more sort of thing.

To be clear, it made $31.5 million and topped the box office charts in the US.

Yes that's less than projected (which was $45 million) and its not a great start, but neither is it absolutely terrible.
