Given the success of their latest album California I thought, rather than bump one of the old threads (none of which are from this decade :o ), I'd create a new thread for one of the all-time greatest musical acts, Mark Hoppus' band of punk-pop oddballs, blink-182.

NME wrote:Blink-182 score their first UK No 1 album

It’s taken 21 years and seven albums for the trio to reach the top in Britain

Blink-182 have scored their first No 1 album in Britain, 21 years since the release of their debut.

Having released their debut album ‘Cheshire Cat’ in 1995, the trio’s new album ‘California’ has dethroned Adele’s ‘25’ from the top spot.

The band told compilers Official Charts Company: “We’re so excited and thankful to be No 1 in the UK. We’re super thankful to all of you for supporting us.” Blink-182’s previous highest charting album was ‘Take Off Your Pants And Jacket’, which reached No 4 in 2001. That same album is currently their only US No 1.

For me blink has always been 'The Mark and whoever he's with Show'. Angels & Airwaves was overly pretentious, godly nonsense IMO. And box car racer was an embarrassing attempt for Tom to keep making music but without Mark - the punk pop version of the "No Homers Club". Travis is definitely blink-182 now, sure, but if Mark quit and Travis carried it on it clearly wouldn't be the same. I loved +44 and was surprised that those two didn't carry on down that route beyond the one album, but I think the plane crash and then DJ AM's death meant emotions got in the way of pure logic and they decided to give it another go as the 'classic' trio. However when that didn't work - because, surprise surprise, Tom was being a wanker - they went down the logical route that they should have in the first place.

I don't know anything about Alkaline Trio but I think Matt's vocals work really well with Mark's and and a welcome change from the often-too-whiny ones provided by DeLonge. I'm not sure where I'd rank the album in terms of previous blink output - I did love Neighbourhoods when it came out but when it comes to actually listening back to it I skip quite a few tracks, I think my opinion of it is higher than how I actually feel about it when I hear it. Whereas with California, my opinion isn't that high, but I am still listening to it, on repeat, everywhere I go, so I suspect its longevity may be higher, which would indicate a better album - but commercially it's great to see it do so well (and it's satisfying that so many former blink fans would come out of the woodwork now the pretentions of Tom are history  )

I'm not a huge fan of theirs, but that song is incredible.

New Year's Eve, was as boring as heaven
I watched flies strawberry float, on channel 11
There was no one to kiss, there was nothing to drink
Except some old rotten milk someone left in the sink
And there's no ring, there's no ring, on the phone anymore
There's no reason to call, I'm passed out on the floor
Smoked myself stupid, and drank my insides raisin dry

Their new album is actually decent. I liked it. That last track is hilarious.

Best ever Blink track is, of course, Reckless Abandon.

Best blink track is Adam's song. But they're are many decent ones in there. I'm a fan of 'Alien's exist' majorly as well.

Love a bit of blink. Reminds me of being a teenager, and they've got some damn catchy songs. Hoping to pick the new album up soon, liking the odd track I've heard from it so far.

It dethroned Adele?

Wow, it's been a long ass time since I considered myself a real Blink fan (but back in the day I really was), but that's an amazing achievement.

It's not really the kind of thing I'm into these days, but Enema Of The State is a tremendous pop record.

Growing up, and being in a band, their songs were great to get to grips with. What's My Age Again, First Date, All the Small Things and Dammit in particular were nice little tests for 17/18 year old wannabe rock gods.

Still their best record to date. Dude Ranch comes mighty close though.

Tom DeLonge was the best thing about the band. There's a few decent tracks on the new album but they'll never get back to the levels of Adam's Song/Dammit

I haven't listened to them. I like some stuff in the genre, but it isn't really my thing.

I'm basically saying I'm a metal elitist prick.

That whole album is fantastic. Genuinely one of maybe two or three albums I can listen to start to finish without skipping one.

OK firstly, strawberry floating love Blink, saw them at Wembley about a decade ago before their split, and it was glorious.

Secondly, Mark > Tom and it isn't even close.

Thirdly, any fans of Blink that haven't listened to Alkaline Trio, wow. Listen to the albums Crimson and This Addiction.

It's odd that the first single is arguably one of the weakest songs on the album (the lyrics are dire ("life is too short to last long") and it's about a minute too long with the "oooooh ooh ohh oooohhh ohhhhh oh ohhhhh" bridge).

Really like San Diego, She's Out of Her Mind and Home is Such a Lonely Place, though. Naturally the interludes were the first songs to go :dread:

I miss Tom's vocals, they're way better than Mark's, he's so monotone.

Not sure why this album in particular hit No.1, it's one of their worst in my opinion.

Nothing I've listened to on it stands up to Ghost on the Dance Floor or Not Now. I think "Would I be listening to this if Blink 182 hadn't sung it?" Absolutely not.

EDIT: Actually Cynical is pretty good. Probably because most of the song is a Harmony. Mark's Vocals :dread:

This sounds way better though:
