Oh, boy, yeah - absolutely! I can't believe how few lanterns there are. In most games I'd be saving after every fight... here, you're lucky to get a checkpoint every fifty fights  .

I assuming you still stuck werewolves on the bridge, below is a explanation of a very good Werewolf merking tactic which you can use in several instances throughout the game. But if you do not wish to see it as you can see it is spoilered so up to you.

They're too big to fit through doors, in this instance I believe there is a set of stairs going downwards just past them, leading to a doorway, they will follow you up to the doorway but wont be able to enter, two hand your main weapon if you can (basically get maximum reach) and you should be able to slash them up whilst remaining out of their reach, two dead doggies minimum fuss.

Another easy, less cheesy way of killing the wolves is to get visceral attacks on them. It's fairly easy to get them when they do their big lunge attack, they've got a long windup to it where they rear up on their hind legs and stretch their arms out, shoot them just before they lunge and you get a visceral opening. It might take a few tries to learn the timing but once you get it down they're much less of a problem.

Okay... I went back to tackle those two werewolves. On the way I summoned Father Gascoigne... and he seemed to be helping me :toot: . We took out the bevy of baddies at the base of the steps and I was thinking "Cool! We're gonna easily duff up those 'wolves!".

But we got duffed up. Nearly beat 'em, but Gascoigne and I died within a second of each other. I should've tried that doorway trick, the visceral attack (which I seem to have stopped being able to do) or simply just ran past whilst Gascoigne was fighting them but I did none of these things.

Now back at Central Yharnam and I gotta try again :| . The die/try again cycle can be a bit frustrating... I think I'll leave my next attempt for tomorrow.

Edit: But at least I've learnt to equip an item (i.e. a stone) and use it by pressing square. Up until now I've opened the menu (start), selected the item and then "used" it which has made aiming rather tricky   :fp: .

You're making far too big a thing out of those wolves for yourself, they're just regular enemies and you can ignore them if you want. Don't let them become a barrier to you getting on with the rest of the game.

tbf to Jawa it is a bit of a dick move to put two there when you havn't even faced off against one properly yet. I don't count that very first one for obvious reasons.

Still he summoned so he is a little bitch anyway. :datass:

So, I was looking up Father Gascoigne on the Bloodborne wiki and I saw this:

He can be very helpful for clearing the bridge on your way to the Cleric Beast if you do not enter the bridge via a short cut from one of the linked houses.

A shortcut to the bridge? At the moment it's taking me quite a while to get back to it from the Central Yharnam lamp/checkpoint... this sounds like there's a quicker route?

Have you found the ladder to the roof lamp just to the left right at the very start (before the bonfire bit).

Yeah, dude - is that the Cental Yharnam lamp?

Done some digging about this possible bridge shortcut:

If you’d rather avoid the Scourge Beasts, there is another way around the bridge that will allow you to kill the beasts easily. Go back to the occupied house with the cackling ladies near the fountain, and smash up the coffins along the wall to find a ledge to drop down into. This place is filled with dog kennels, and at least two dogs are roaming around down the stairs. Another is likely to burst from his cage - so kill the imprisoned dogs before they get that chance. If you go left before the bridge to the right of where you dropped down, you can find a dog guarding a corpse with Coldblood Dew. The bridge over the canal will lead to the aqueduct and another occupied house, which you can talk to now or later. From the dog kennels, head up the stairs to a branching path. the stairs on the left are broken, but have Coldblood Dew. The route to the right leads to not one but two patrolling giant brick-wielding Huntsman's Minions, who are guarding an elevator to the second boss past the aqueducts. The path straight ahead goes under the bridge and into a dark house. Get your bearings quickly, because there’s one angry huntsman just to the left immediately as you enter the dark house, and an angry blunderbuss toting huntsman in a wheelchair further back in the dark, watching over a corpse with Pungent Blood Cocktails (he may look harmless from behind but don’t be fooled!). The blood cocktails make good distractions for beasts, but they'll be in short supply for quite a while. There's also a note on the far cabinet which can give you some more insight to the story. The path to the second floor has two more hiding enemies, one of which guards a corpse with some Coldblood Dew. Hold off on the second-floor door to the bridge for just a moment and exit through the opposite door on the first floor. Go up the stairs and kill the lone man, grab the Blood Stone Shard from the corpse, then go up to the gate and open it. You’ve now opened a shortcut leading back to the waypoint - which is going to be very useful in a moment.

Head back into the building and up the stairs, through the door to the bridge. If you didn't already kill the Scourge Beasts on the bridge, you can see them here. Throw a pebble or attract their attention and quickly run back into the top floor of the building you just exited. The beasts will get trapped in the doorway and you can easily kill them without taking any damage. Now all that lies between you and the end of the bridge is one brick-wielding Huntsman's Minion and a few Carrion Crows. Lure the minion away from the crows, then finish the birds off after. As you make your way to the end of the bridge, say hello to your first boss fight...

Guess I'll need to check this out!

When trying a visceral attack make sure you are stood still when you press R1, if you're holding any directional buttons it doesn't work.

Ah! Thanks. I think I may have been rolling / moving around....

A world of pain :( . That boss health bar is just ridiculously big. Oh, well, at least I got there :) . I'll take a break and then I'll fight another day.

I found the Cleric Beast harder than Gazza. In Souls games I always find the large bosses more difficult than those who are a similar size, always misjudge the window in which I can attack.

little bit of advice jawa, use the first few fights with any boss to just observe what they do, what attacks they pull off and how to dodge them - if you just concentrate on trying to wack them youll have many frustrating deaths before you make any progress.

Here's my cleric beast fight from way back. I beat him first time and it appeared a good tactic was getting behind and weakening the legs until he fell over (and I didn't know about visceral attacks yet so I missed the chance for one).

The thing I found with the CB, and other "Beast" bosses, is that you intuitively try and dodge backwards or to the side. Because they are quite big, they usually have decent reach and you still get thwacked when you come out of the dodge.

You have to learn to dodge forward, into the attacks. This often puts you right underneath them and, more often that not, you can beat the beast bosses by wailing on their legs from behind.

Just don't oversdo it with the stamina usage. You want to always have enough to dodge away and get out/heal. Better to take two hits than a third and getting punished. This is why I prefer the faster weapons as you cancel an attack animation easier and get out.

EDIT - Urgh been playing for an hour this morning and it's so jerky after coming from a 60fps game. It's hurting my eyes a bit.

I forgot how overlevelled I was by the end. Due to doing all the chalice dungeons for the platinum trophy, I'm level 174 going in to New Game+. Tried ringing the beckoning bell but no-one is going to be my level. I need 218,485 echoes just to level up now.

Jawa, you have opened up the shortcut from the Central Yarhnam lantern that basically leads back to the werewolf bridge right? It makes the trek back to the CB much quicker. You just have to do the two werewolves and the troll. Use the gun or stones to bait one wolf from the other.
