Ludwig? Another one to add to the list of not very good boss fights.
Same issues as My love, daughter of cosmos. Cheap charge move that is so wide with such a short tell its just bullshit.
Jumping up in the air and falling attacks that can hit you even when running away and often when rolling.
Struggled to decide whether locking on was good or not. In the end I ended up having to just because not locking on meant I could hardly ever see him. Early on I tried parrying but strawberry float knows if I got the timing wrong or just couldn't parry those moves. So after a few attempts of that I gave with trying. I'm just a sitting duck doing that. It could reach me from so far that I hardly had to time to heal. Specially as it was so aggressive. Framerate seemed to drop a lot at points. Obviously the best thing to do was get close and just hope I didn't get hit by something. A few times I managed to stun him. But sometimes only very briefly but also a couple of times proper full you can do a visceral attack now type stun. Only I never got to do a visceral attack because a) I wasn't standing in whatever place I obviously had to be b) I had no idea this was going to happen because its just a mess of me hitting a mess of things over and over. Thats my overriding impression of some of these fights. Just messy.
Anyway. Got him to his second phase. Every single time this phase happened my character would start the fight swinging away with me pressing no buttons. Every single time after the cutscene.
So the first time I was
quickly murdered as I wondered and laughed at this games bewildering polish.
Now I'm assuming these were the last actions I entered when the cutscene started but strawberry float me. To start a phase in a fight honestly not sure why your character is doing things is woeful.
Never mind that I'm attacked straight away as well.
Ignoring this bollocks. The second phase seemed much better. With some clearer attack patterns and an enemy that wasn't a giant hitbox of pain.
That was until the
giant 1 stun lock kill attack happened. So cheap.
Despite getting a bit better at the fight it would then prove a bit of a pain to get back to this point. Particularly when the boss
decides to do all the moves. and then it pretty much 1 hit killed me
with its stupid falling attack that does far too much damage for something so stupidly big and erratic to avoid. Then when I finally got back the game basically gave up trying and said strawberry float it. Lets see how you deal with not
being able to see a strawberry floating thing. Fortunately this proved to just the death I needed as then, presumably powered by my ever increasing salt levels I beat the bastard. Was it satisfying? Elating? Did I feel like I bested the beast and triumphed! Nah. I felt like I got good enough to just fudged it and got lucky. Much like when I faced Bob I was just glad it was over.
The fight had been so bad I decided to murder the severed head with my hammer regardless of anything else.
I'm sure the lore surrounding Ludwig van Horsey is really cool but the fight was gooseberry fool.
The lantern was placed really well and the inclusion of something that dropped vials each time was welcome. Its as if they knew farming for vials was an issue in the game at last.
Things improved greatly as I explored the following area which was largely a highly enjoyable section. Even if it is Dukes Archive the second. I picked it apart bit by bit. Even the boss fight against MATT the living failures was decent enough. I loved the room (big softspot for sunflowers) and whilst it seemed very much like the earlier horde type fight (I think this was deliberate) it did enough that was different. The bit when they call forth the cosmic powers of comets or whatever.
I probably would have got them on my first attempt but one attack knocked me into a place that shoved the camera
up my arse. My only complaint would be that it would be good to have had a different design between those that did melee attacks and those that did ranged and that for some reason it felt very slow. I dunno if it was the framerate again but it just never felt as snappy as I thought it should. Then after defeating them I headed back and looked for a few secrets in the cells and stuff. Also..... that lift.
