I started this tonight and I'm completely new to this "Dark Souls" style of game. I'm really enjoying the gothic design and atmosphere, even though it's amazingly spooky

I quickly died (I guess this is meant to happen... a lot) and arrived in a hub area where I chose two weapons (one for each hand). I then returned to the start area via a portal and faced up against the wolf-beastie again... but I couldn't use my new weapons. My inventory says they're there but I can't equip them.

So I ran past it and then tried to tackle a scary sentry guy with bare knuckles - this wasn't a great success. How do I equip the gear that I've (allegedly) picked up?

Git gud.

I think you equip in the menu that appears when you press options. It's been ages since I played it but I think that's where it is.

Yeah, I can see the two weapons in the menu but I wasn't able to select them. I'm probably doing something very silly... I'll take another look tomorrow.

I think if you have something equipped to a slot, then the corresponding dpad direction toggles it between equipped and unequipped. You may have pressed a dpad direction and turned one 'off'.

Yeah, if you open your equipment menu and it's there without going deeper into your inventory then it's equipped.

You have two slots for each hand and you can swap between them on the fly. It's just that at the start you only have one slot filled so it's likely you swapped to your fists or equipped them to the second slot.

I struggled with how to equip the weapons in Bloodborne too, and I went on to complete the game, so don't let this hold you back Jawa.

Me too. I didn't even use weapons in the end, went on to complete the game using just my bare hands. I did die once though.

Yes?

Thanks chaps; I def had two weapons (one for each hand; a gun and a "sword") that I picked up after dying the first time but I think I must have used the dpad to deselect them as, when using the shoulder buttons to attack; I was just using fists. I won't be able to play the gane today but I hope to tomorrow evening :toot: .

Cheers, 'pip. You "got gud" and tamed the horrors... I will need to display the same level of resolve!

I was just using my fists and didn't last long  . I ran away from that first wolf-beast (even though he followed me out the door and I nearly filled my pants) but then succumbed to an ancient-security-guy who done me over whilst I flailed my fists

My goal is to get to those huge boss creatures and beat one or two of them. They look incredible!

My breakthrough in dark souls was realising that dying doesn't matter in the traditional sense. You're supposed to, it's how you learn, make mistakes, die, don't do it again.

Our just read every spoiler going like glowy.

Will confirm that while dying seems really punishing (especially in Souls where it's also tied to humanity), the game is balanced around you dying. For example, if you get half way to a lantern and die you'll have more blood echoes when you get back to your death spot because of the backtracking.

The only bad thing is dying on the way back to your bloodstain because you lose everything. But that only matters when levels cost hundreds of thousands of echoes since early game everything is chump change you can recover from easily.

I took me a little while when I first played it to realise you get your first weapon when you die. I killed the wolf and a few of the mob near the start with fists assuming I'd just find a weapon lying around. I think I first got killed by the fat axe wielding guy near the wall you can glitch over to skip half the game. You can find a weapon not that long after you start in the sewers area, the saw spear I think but it would be pretty hard getting there with just fists I reckon.

I took a break from Dark Souls 3 to start Bloodborne the other day. I'm late to the party, but have realised these are among my favorite games. Managed to beat the first few bosses, but the sniper in the clock tower is causing me some problems at the moment.

You know you can avoid him - you don't have to kill him...you don't have to fight him either...

I did not know that. I'll have a look around for another way.

Depends what you mean - the entire area where he is optional. To go through it you have to get shot at by him - but when you get to the ladder with him you can just continue past rather than climb up and fight

MASSIVE SPOILER for alternative options

You can kill him now...

Or you can come back later from the opposite direction and if you climb up without him seeing/shooting you he's all friendly and will talk to you.

Just to add to that in the event that you befriend him he will turn hostile again as soon as you fight/kill anything in that general area. There is also a very easy way to kill him, I forget who on here first discovered it but it works a treat.
