Gamespot 9

I finished Bloodborne in less time than I did Dark Souls II, yet I treasure it more in spite of its few missteps. In death there is life, and in blood, there is redemption. More hyperbole, yes, but for a game this theatrical, only hyperbole will do.

IGN Review in progress

There’s so much left to see and do, and many cryptic mysteries left to solve. As I keep going, I’ll be paying many, many more visits to Bloodborne’s Chalice Dungeons, and look to give special attention to the cooperative elements on tap.

Eurogamer 1st impressions

Which leads to the overwhelming question: is Bloodborne better than Dark Souls? I don't know, and anyone who says they do is a fool. I knew from the start that Dark Souls was brilliant, but it took months until I appreciated just how deep and complex a masterpiece it was. The most important thing about Bloodborne is that, despite the surface similarities, it plays and feels very different. Who knows how I'll feel in a few months? But first impressions are easy. Bloodborne is brilliant.

Polygon Review in Progress

Bloodborne has already won me over with its distinct look, its expert design and its focus on the core combat that I loved so much in previous Souls games. It also goes in directions I never expected. I can't wait to play more.

Destructoid 9

Bloodborne is an interesting mix of everything From Software has learned throughout its storied developmental career. Not everything will gel with fans old and new, but for the most part, the shift towards a combat-oriented game is a net positive. From Software is still one of the only developers left that makes you work for your satisfaction, and Bloodborne is damn satisfying.

US Gamer Review in progress

As I write this, I haven't finished Bloodborne, and won't be able to explore the various multiplayer options until its release, but I've been nothing but thoroughly impressed in my 30-odd hours with the game. Every area brings untold surprises, nasty traps, and terrible bosses that made me say "No frickin' way" upon their first appearance. And even though I've encountered some roadblocks, the open-ended nature of Bloodborne acts as a release valve if you reach a frustrating sticking point: After bashing my head against a boss for the dozenth time, I decided to explore a bit more, and found two new areas I gradually conquered before returning to kick said boss' butt. As of this writing, there's nothing I want to do other than play more Bloodborne, but honestly, what I'm most looking forward to is how much mileage the Souls community will get out of this experience. There's so many lore videos to make, speedruns to shatter minds, and discussions to be had about just what the hell's up with Bloodborne's twisted, Gothic world. And I can see myself staying up way too late for the next year wrapping my brain around all of it.

EGM 9.5

Though built on the same core as the Souls games, Bloodborne marks the largest departure from the status quo to date. The numerous changes, many in service of a faster and more aggressive playstyle, might not be for everyone, but if you embrace that shift, you might well have a new favorite in the From Software canon.

Gameinformer 9.75

Bloodborne is a blood-drenched horror gem that has only the faintest of cracks in its façade. Bloodborne succeeds through sparse storytelling, lush atmospheres (conjuring up notions of the best of Lovecraft’s work), and tight combat that forces you to be aggressive. While this new IP doesn’t stray far from the established Souls franchise, it is a magical, wondrous work that admirably instills both terror and triumph in those brave enough to delve into it.

Gamesradar 4.5/5

Bloodborne lies somewhere between Dark Souls and Dark Souls 2, better than the latter but not quite as good as the former. The fourth time following the same template means the master strokes, however masterful they are, are anticipated. But take nothing away from this brilliant, brooding, brutal reinvention, because almost as great as the best game ever is pretty bloody great.

So was project beast essentially just the code name for this title? I honestly thought it was going to be announced as Demon Souls 2. The name doesn't matter I guess.

Dark Souls 2 is my favourite game at the moment, hoping this is good too.

Bit peeved no 'in-game' footage like the leaks we've had :( Still, more Dark Souls-esque games from, erm, FROM, are always welcome

I'm hoping this is more Dark Souls 2 than the actual Dark Souls 2

If we're starting a new thread for this, then could the Project BEAST thread be archived? Or maybe stick the leaked screens and webms in the OP?

If this is indeed by the Demon's and Dark Souls team then I'm not surprised it differs from the first two games as they must be sick of that formula.

Anyone else feel that a trailer like that tells you absolutely nothing about the game and is a complete waste of time?

Like most CGI trailers.

I don't usually watch them, then E3 comes along and a load of stuff about new games crops up on the sites and forums I usually lurk on, so I click a few links and am reminded why trailers are utterly pointless unless they show in game footage. You often can't tell that until you have already watched it though.

Bloodborne is the cover story of this week's Famitsu, and there's an interview with Miyazaki in it as well. Here are some details reported by a Japanese blog who got the magazine early.

- Spring 2015 release window
- They started work on this right after finishing Artorias of the Abyss, targeting Sony's new hardware
- The world and story is completely new, and the setting takes full advantage of the PS4's capabilities
- They're targeting 30fps at 1080p
- The keywords for the game is "blood" and "beast"
- There will be melee and long range weapons (guns) this time
- Character customization is confirmed
- There will be no map display in the game
- He wants combat to not just focus on action but also the strategic element
- The combat in the game is designed to feel like a life or death struggle
- There will be online elements of some sort, and it will involve players "discovering" together

Targeting Sony's new hardware

I still don't understand why this wasn't a multiplatform project that departed from the Demon's franchise. What's the reason for this remaining exclusive to Sony? Is it really a sequel to Demon's Souls?

They're targeting 30fps at 1080p

To get people to buy their console. Same as all exclusives really.

Maybe they needed a break from the Demon's/Dark formula. This allows them to do something slightly different, with Sony picking up the tab.
