Having never played Bloodborne I am thoroughly enjoying jawa's running commentary. Hope you stick it out dude, there's no better feeling than making progress in these games. :-)

"Double" shortcut? Is that 'cos there's the Central Yharnam lamp and the gate? I hope it's gonna be a nice time-saver as I spent *ages* killing off all the baddies in that big bonfire area. It was super-tough... and they'll all be back again :x .

I had a funny moment with that big beastie that is bashing against the huge locked doors near the big bonfire. I saw him when I went past on the high walkway and I didn't want to try and tackle him. At the end of the walkway I went down the steps (by that fountain-type thing) and duffed up a few big crows. I ddn't venture near the big baddie and instead went up the steps and started tackling the group of guys/dogs up there. Anyway, during that battle the big beast must have been disturbed and came charging up to where I was. I started to brick myself but kept cool and he wasn't that tough to defeat :toot: .

After that I edged up the stairs and saw the two huge werewolves... quickly turned back and eventually stumbled across that short-cut. It was quite an adventure :-) .

I'm certain that guy is programmed to just go up there to surprise people.

Basically you found a shortcut to the shortcut.

Beat BSB and Amelia on the first try too. :datass:

I don't know if it's because of the different TV I'm playing on this time, but the game is much darker than I remember. I need to almost always be holding the torch which is kind of adding to the atmosphere and creepiness. The screams of those hags who sneak up and start slashing your throat. :dread:

Ah Gazza, beat him first time on initial play through through one of those quirky bugs the game was full of during the first few weeks. was a bit of an epic for a first attempt and I'd actually got him down to 1/4 health when I had to bail away from him at the back off the boss area and heal. I think I got back to full health but I was strawberry floated as had no more vials left so trotted back out thinking I was facing impending doom but he was nowhere to be seen.

Walked around for about 30 seconds and prey slaughtered inexplicably appeared across the screen.

In my head he'd decided he couldn't be arsed and went down the pub for a brown ale and a whiskey chaser.

I disagree. Knocking them off and.never playing them.is a much greater feeling.

all the Souls games are much more enjoyable when - as Ad said - you stop worrying about dying. in fact, most games are that way.
i'd also add in Soulsborne, dont worry about losing souls/echoes; youll get them back eventually and the best way to make use of them is to kill boss, warp back and level, repeat. just dont be a silly bugger and kill a boss and then die in some dumb way. that was the most stressful thing about Dark Souls 1 before you got the Lordvessel  :x

Yeah, Dave, I'm only in the opening stage but theer are some dark bits... and I've found that playing with headphones on just creeps me out :shifty: .

Just downloaded this so I can play it tonight for the first time.

Never played a Souls-style game before so I'm looking forward to this.

Welcome, Skarjo, to a world of pain!

Still not had the chance to load this up since Saturday but I'm determined to do so today.

I splashed out my Blood Echoes on some improved clothing. Hopefully it'll help me in battle!

Edit: Wandering around Yharnam and knocked on a door. Got the response "If you hunters got off your arses, we wouldn't be in this mess!" .

The sound is both amazing and funny; the characters speak in "common English" and yet they scream and wail in an impressively bestial style!

I know, man - I will look into streaming / Twitch setup this evening :-).

I wandered into some kinda factory and beat a couple of enemies. However, there were then quite a few and I ran away and climbed down a ladder into a river. I quickly recognised that this was a bad move, as a really tall beast-man-thing strode over and killed me. So, I'm back at the Central Yharnam checkpoint again.

Have you put much time into it, Skarjo? I found that what some of the other guys were saying is true; you have to embrace the "play/get killed/play and get a little further/ get killed' cycle. In Soulsborne... death is living!

Meanwhile... I'm back near that "shortcut" area where the dogs in cages are. I'm sure that, the first time I was there, the dogs stayed in their cages. This time they didn't and it was soon a full-on battle zone :o .

Oh, and I'm nervous about there not really being a pause mode. Always panicking that something is gonna attack whilst I'm away from the screen for a moment :) .

If you're playing offline I think you can just suspend the game to the dashboard to pause it?

Only a few hours.

I'm only messing, it's quite fun. Learning the attack patterns and signals etc are quite fun, but it's definitely frustrating how much space there is between checkpoints given how easily one mis-step resets the whole strawberry floatin' thing.

Ah! Thanks, I didn't think of that - will try it!

Yeah, the "repeat" cycle is pretty demanding. I know that I'm on a relatively easy stage so I can only imagine how things are gonna get :dread: .

- - - - - - - - - -

Just did one of those "killer attacks" :toot: . I went back to the factory and crept up behind a beastie there... slowly moved towards him and then pressed R2 for a power attack and then followed it up with (I think!) L1 for a slash attack. BOOM! The beast was down 8-) .

Edit: I'm through to the other side of the factory and am by the river. Duffed up some crows (one of which roared/screeched like Godzilla or something :dread: ) and I'm just about to fall down a ledge 'cos I can see a big ladder there.

I just got the item Madman's Knowledge after killing a few giant crows! :o . This is important for levelling up, isn't it? I just "used" it... was that the right thing to do?

EDIT: Following that, I discovered a gate that I could unlock and took me back to the area in Yharnam where that big beast is hammering the locked door. Hopefully this is another short-cut that I habe created?

Dang. I beat the beast by the door (he ran up the steps after me again!) and the other enemies... but then got killed by the two werewolves at the top of the steps. I'm back at Hunter's Dream but can't see that Madman's Knowledge in my inventory... have I lost it? :( .

Edit: Gonna take a break now. Feels great to have made some good progress... I just hope that my new item (see above) hasn't been taken!
