There are 5 bosses in total. 4 are progression but the last you have to send the surgery alter up, get off and pick up the skull that comes up. Then take it back to the Flaming Cleric Beast.

I remember i beat the first one easily, and i thought they were push overs. Then they proceeded to strawberry float me eight ways from sunday every time i came up against them. Thankfully you can avoid most of them. Youre getting close tot he final boss now tho. So if you thought those guys gave you problems...

A little bit disappointed that the first area in the DLC sort of reuses level assets. Was looking forward to exploring a whole new area, and it's sort of just areas you've walked through before so far.

It doesn't help that I have been away for two weeks which has broken the game's addictive hold on me. Sort of just want to finish it now. Going into the chalice dungeons possibly made it a bit of a chore too.

Ho, just got absolutely pounded by the second form of the first DLC boss. His first fork is fine, not too different from a few other of the beast bosses. The second form I couldn't get close to or have time to heal.

Managed to beat the Defiled Chalice yesterday - due to the health cut it contains some of the toughest bosses of the lot.

Just the last dungeon to go now, then the final area of the DLC and the final bosses. Looks like this game will be my first platinum trophy, which is hugely fitting as I have enjoyed every second and it's probably one of my all time favourites.

Well done Parksey, it's a bloody tough game. I wish I could have stuck with it but having a busy few weeks meant I lost my momentum and couldn't get passed the Shadow of Yarnham.

I wish I enjoyed the boss fights in these games but for me the enjoyment comes from exploring new areas.

When should you use the Chalices? I have had one for a while, but never used it. Think it's the Pturemu chalice.

Aaaaaaand that's the platinum trophy in the bag. My first platinum too, as I don't really bother with them usually, but I wanted to see everything the game had to offer, and a lot of unique bosses are stashed away in those chalice dungeons.

Unfortunately, for the defiled chalice I did grind to get my health up to 50 and get higher strength. As a result, though I was over leveled just ahead of the difficulty curve throughout the main story (just enough to stop certain bosses being frustrating difficulty spikes and to keep progress smooth), the final two encounters were ridiculously easy. Think I jumped something like 100 levels just by doing the dungeons.

I was level 173 in the end. That includes going through all the DLC too. The DLC proved much more of a satisfying challenge than the story's final boss. It was robbed of its epicness and satisfaction by my ridiculously high level.

Still, the game is probably one of my all time favourites. Will go through it again in New Game Plus at a later date. Now I sit and wait for Dark Souls to arrive from the UK.

You can use them as soon as you get them (a few drop after beating the bosses in the main game).

The Chalice depth determines its difficulty, with 1 being the easiest and 5 being the hardest. You can probably do depth 1 and maybe 2 now - I did them towards the endgame and they are insulting easy. Depth 3 was when they started to get challenging.

There are two types of chalices, the normal ones and the root chalices. The root ones are randomly generated and the normal ones have set loot, layouts and enemies/bosses.

To get the gold trophy for the "final" dungeon boss, you need to progress through the normal ones. Generally if you start with that first chalice, the next chalice you need to do will drop with the final boss of the dungeon.

You'll also need ritual materials to create chalices. Again, generally the ones you need next will be found in the preceding dungeon, though towards the end you need to go into another to get some to progress. Think there are maybe six dungeons you need to do to get that trophy, one of which will likely be really hard.

Got gud :datass:

Well done, I'm so close to platinum but I hit a wall in the chalice dungeon, defiled I think, where you have half health. Some witch hat boss was giving me gooseberry fool so I gave up and moved on. One day I'll get it

Right. Seriously considering this game (the GOTY edition on psn atm has reignited my interest). I am worried about the frustration factor that is often mentioned. Can people give an indication of who it really isn't likely to click for?

I like rpg's and still play old school games. But they do often make me realise how much more suitable modern games sensibilities are for my more mature years. I don't mind dying lots in games as long as though I am always making tangible progress. The setting and everything certainly clicks for me. I don't like min maxing etc and would rather not spend too much time in menus. Not a fan of grinding for the sake of grinding either tbh.

Thoughts? Also I'm guessing the co op features (and potential help they brig) are gonna be a bit limited now due to the age of the game.

Cheers guys.

Menus are only really to change gear, but as there are only a dozen and a half weapons or so you can quickly just settle into one which works for you. For armour it's pretty much just Fashion Souls on that part. The defensive values do matter, but it's not like they're on a linear progression outside of very specific areas where you might want more poison resistance or frenzy resistance. Armour sets are usually pretty balanced and you can have really early gear do you well into endgame if it works for you.

Minmaxing, again, doesn't really matter. It's been toned down a LOT from Souls so you only have HP, Stamina, your 2 physical stats and your two "magic" stats to bump so it's much simpler to just get into the level up screen and do it without planning your upgrade path.

As for the difficulty, it's usually very fair, so as long as you learn why you died on that enemy you should be good to get past them next time. I can't think of a time when I actually hit a progress wall (Outside of bosses, but the learning thing still applies), but I guess by that time I had played 3 other Souls games.

I'll say the same thing I say for any SoulsBorne game: as long as you're willing to learn how to play it, the difficulty is overstated. It will punch you in the face right from the start, but a lot of people just never learn to duck.

Yeah, the start is probably the hardest part. The first two bosses can be a difficulty spike, especially for those who are new to the series. I managed the first boss okay after a few tries, but the second was probably my hardest encounter in the game.

I'm going to start Dark Souls in a week or so when it finally arrives, so can't comment on how hard that is, but for me Bloodborne's reputation as a ridiculously hard game is overstated.

They are punishing rather than hard. If you make a mistake, you'll get punished for it. If you make that mistake again, you'll get punished for it. You'll keep getting punished for it, as long as you keep doing it. So you learn by sticking your fingers in the plug socket, not to stick your fingers in the plug socket.

For me it always felt like I was making progress. If not physically within a level, I was getting better at adapting to enemies and learning their patterns. Or learning how to use my weapon more effectively, or how to dodge and space myself so I didn't get hit.

One thing I will say is to be conservative. Until I got to the chalice dungeons I didn't really grind per se, though if I was within a certain amount of echoes for levelling up, I'd generally go and get them before venturing into a boss room or a strange, dangerous new place. As a result I didn't lose so a massive amount of echoes too many times, and I was always ticking away and levelling up.

You do need to get used to dying and losing echoes mind. It's part of the process.

I wouldn't worry about minmaxing either. From what I hear about the Souls series, it helps to plan your upgrades and character, whereas here you can generally just pick whatever at the start and go on. There isn't really a best "class", as within a few levels you can even stats out or pump a few up.

Personally, I ignored Arcane and Bloodtinge, only levelling them when I reached the hard cap in other stats. I found a weapon I liked that improved as my Skill increased so concentrated on that. At the start of the game, if you're new to the series it probably helps to increase Vitality and Health. That's what I did to get past those first two bosses.

Great replys, thanks guys. Sounds like there is nothing here that will turn me off the game too much.
My problem with games is, be they good or bad, I will tend to stick with them and give them a fair crack. This is part of the reason I really don't like picking up games that don't click with me (not so much the money wasted as the time playing it). Sounds like this character flaw of mine might actually aid my enjoyment of this one!

I'm stuck on the Watchdog in there. :dread:

I feel myself far more drawn back to the chalice dungeons than I am to replay Dark Souls 3. There's no doubt Bloodborne is one of the best games ever.

Yeah, if you discount the fact that a lot of my top ten games are probably heavily weighted by nostalgia, Bloodborne would probably be in there.

Even now I have fully completed the game and platinumed it, I still want to go back and play NG+ straightaway. Only the fact that I have quite a few big titles on PS Plus (including Demon's Souls) and a recently arrived copy of Dark's Souls, has prevented me from doing so. I don't want to burn myself out on the series.

Bloodborne was my entry point into that and they do say you always remember your first (this is why I have fond memories of Fat Sally the fishmonger), though I also reckon I'll prefer the faster pace of BB to its predecessors.

Sneakily hoping that a sequel might be announced at E3 in a few weeks.

As for the Watchdog, I found that fairly easy once I could bait it into attacking me with its head. Admittedly, I watched a YouTube video of someone fighting it after dying a few times - I find it much easier to analyze a boss' patterns when I am not desperately trying to stay alive.

When it pulls it's head back to the left or right, dash around it and get two hits in. Immediately dash back and to to the side as it'll probably then charge at you. The rest of the fight just evade it and wait for it to do the head attack. You don't need to risk getting a hit in if you're patient.

That Watchdog fight where you have half health is where I gave up on the Chalice dungeons. I just couldn't manage it.

So, I started again with a new character, and well, I'm ploughing through it. 8-) First two bosses go down with next to no effort, considering the father gave me massive massive grief last time Im proud of myself. DS3 has taught me well, the game just seems much easier. Especially now I understand the parry system properly. :slol:

Limmy got this a few days ago and started streaming. Loved his Dark Souls III streams.

Here he is rage quitting and telling everyone in chat to basically strawberry float off and die after being killed by Blood-Starved Beast a few times  https://youtu.be/-P5YqFLjqNg?t=8003
