With just a few months until Daniel Craig's 4th outing as James Bond in SPECTRE I thought I'd try and watch all of the James Bond films to date. I've seen a lot of them but there's a few I've never seen and my memory of some is hazy. So with that I propose a Bondathon. Looking at doing two a week until SPECTRE is released.
Feel free to join in and post your thoughts on each film after watching it, otherwise this might turn in to a 'Hyperion watches'!!

Week 1

I watched them all last year when Sky did a special Bond movie channel. I even watched the original Casino Royale which was an American TV movie based on the exploits of Jimmy Bond.

What are everybody's most underrated Bond films (in their opinion)?

For me it's License to Kill. It's a really neat side-step for the series I thought, with some proper nasty villains. One of those rare Bond movies where you actually fear for his life. It didn't go down well at the time, mainly due to the brutality, but there's a really decent story being told I reckon.

The way he plays off Sanchez against his partners (turning them into enemies) and immerses himself into his retinue is awesome.

Brosnan after goldeneye was so bad that they had to almost reboot Bond.

In a funny kind of way Die Another Day saved Bond. It was so bad that they had no other choice but to take it in a different direction (a bit like the Batman franchise)

Tomorrow Never Dies is fine, it just has the stupid stealth boat and Jonathan Price hamming it up like few actors ever have. World is Not Enough is pants but does have Brosnan's best line as Bond...

In terms of who made the best Bond: Brosnan > Connery > Dalton > Craig > Lazenby > Moore
In terms of who starred in the best films: Connery > Craig > Dalton > Brosnan > Lazenby > Moore
In terms of who is my general favourite: Connery > Brosnan > Craig > Dalton > Lazenby > Moore

I do think Dalton and to an extent Lazenby are very underrated.

Seems a little kind on the Brosnan films, he was a great Bond though.

Dr No

Confession - I've never seen this before. Thought I'd seen bits of it, but apparently it's only the bits in clip shows either Ursula Andress coming out of the sea, or Bond, James Bond.
Opening credits - A bit naff really, the gun barrel was weird as well, although it's the first of what is now tradition so bonus points, 6/10
Bond Girls - Honey Ryder, , Miss Taro :datass: , Sylvia :dread: - James Bond clearly sets out his established way of really getting to know the women before he sleeps with them here! 8/10
Gadgets - Walther PPK - Liked the introduction of the new weapon along with the silencer, particularly enjoyed "That's a Smith and Wesson. And you've had your six." showing Bond as a cold ruthless killer. 7/10
Plot - Didn't really get the plot, Strangways gets killed and something is happening to US space rockets. There's a Chinese Dr who owns an island that people don't go to because there's a dragon 5/10
Car chase - A few good winding turns around Jamaica but the driving in front of a screen looks terrible and a car laughably explodes.
One liners - The above 'Smith and Wesson' was fantastic, of course you get the first Bond, James Bond and there's a few good others in there 'No I'm just looking' - 9/10
Bad guy - Dr No. He's a decent enough bad guy and the fact you don't see him until the last 20 minutes of the film adds to his mystery, but when you see it's a bloke with gooseberry fool metal hands it's a bit disappointing although he does mention SPECTRE 7/10
Climactic fight - What climactic fight, a little wrestle with Dr No on a platform that's descending in to nuclear water. Dr No dies because his gooseberry fool hands can't grip a pole 3/10

Overall, I enjoyed it although I was never quite sure what Dr No was doing, and the end was a bit of a let down. A very good start to a now mega franchise. Connery did great starting it off.
8/10

Anyone seen the utter gooseberry fool covers on the re-release of the films on BluRay?
